I've had my doubts about this stuff! So does Vern! This chit turns to water when hot. I've always had good OP, but after riding in Manhattan traffic at Ground Zero today, my oil light came on sitting at idle. OT was only 240 deg! No reason for that. I'm usually at 10 psi at idle. Will be switching back to Dino Oil next week, before ME/MV trip. Will change every 2K and think that will take care of my motor better than that synthetic crap!!! ;)

Geeeez Howie, why does everything you don't like have to become crap?
What kind of syn you running.
I'm running the mobil 1 and the jury is still out on it.

But after second thought we put 4500 miles on the two dressers going to milwaukee and neither used a drop. So maybe the jury isn't to far out.

this chit starts bordering on reliegon/poltics ( there's another on 103 "FTR" ) but most syn's are formulated for specific characteristics. one brand may hold up better to your habits then another  :nixweiss:

I was talking to a Harley  Tech yesterday about the top end noise on the 110 and he said and I quote GET RID OF THE SYN OIL AND USE DINO THEN YOUR MOTOR WILL BE QUIET AGAIN

Anyone else been told this ?

Used either Mobil 1 20/50 or Amsoil 20/50 for 20K +...oil pressure never got below 10psi, and that was some of the  time spent in 100 + ambient temps.

It's a scientifically proven fact that dino oil will begin breaking down at lower temps than synthetic.

Take it for what it's worth.

Synthetic will go in my bike after 600 mile break in, just like it did in the Ultra, the Duc, and the Vrod.  Quieter, shifted easier, found neutral easier.

Since CVO's come with Synthetic from the get-go, would it hurt to actually switch during the PDI?

Actually, Howie may be on to something.  One of the things that can occur with dino droppings is thickening at high temps.  When us car folks were dealing with new emission systems and hotter running engines back in the 70's, we had failures where the oil was like jello when we pulled the pan.  The auto makers came up with new motor oil requirements to control this thickening, which the oil industry met with different additive packages, but the natural tendency of dino oil is to thicken when over cooked.  I figure all you need to do is find some SD or SE rated oil (SF is when they added the anti-thickening agents) and as it starts to thicken up you won't notice that drop in oil pressure.  Well, at least until the engine locks up and quits running.

It gets well over 100 here in CA. If I get caught in traffic, the oil temp will sometimes get to 260 or so. Oil pressure stays up around 10. I'm running Amsoil 20w50. I did have a Fueling oil pump put in on the last tear down. There is nothing wrong with synthetic. Is your oil temp gauge actually reading right? (sensor is in the pan, yes?)  8)

Not basing it on OT, I'm measuring OP with a gauge, and also have the OP warning light. I use a Feuling Oil Pump too. Never had an issue before today except the racket the engine makes with synthetic. Like I said, I was never sold on it. Now I'm pretty sure I'm done trying to be sold on it. Call me old school, but this Dinosaur is going back to my ancestors oil! FTS!! ;D ;)

OK, just got off the phone with Feuling. According to them, they agree, synthetic turns to water above 235 deg F. Doesn't break down, but gets VERY thin! With a little wear of the OP and camplate, you will see a drop in OP at idle with that stuff. Vern feels that way, Feuling feels that way, Hub feels that way!!! So guess what? Dino's going in next week!!! I'll change it every 2000-2500 and not worry about it breaking down. If the dino doesn't help the idle OP, I'll tear it down in the winter, measure crank runout, and send the camplate and OP back to Feuling to bring it back to spec or have them replaced! That's what ya do when you ride on the edge and break chit! YOU FIX IT AND DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!!! ;D ;)

Thanks for the heads up on that Mike! I'll check it out and will prolly give it a try! :2vrolijk_21:

BTW, this motor was broken in with Dino oil. It stayed in  (with frequent changes of course) til 5K on the motor. Just over 11K now on the motor. So this is only the 3rd batch of SynCrap that's been in it! Just hoping it's not too late now is all! ;)

Hoist! 8)

Added: Just checked with Vern. Revtech's been making that for awhile he tells me. But he just uses 3 qts of regular 20-50 and and adds 1/2-1 qt of straight 60 weight to it to top it off! So that's what I'll be doing too!

So, once you change it out, you'll have to go on the same hellride and then check OT and idle OP, then report back! :2vrolijk_21:

Say, shouldn't you be basing this decision on the percentage of time you spend at idle vs. WOT?!?!? :nixweiss: :confused5: ???

  Hoist,

This is just my 2nd 07 CVO.  My first one (Cobalt Blue Pale Gold Flames) lasted 3 weeks.  Every other day I was at the Harley shop telling them something was wrong.  Service manager constantly blew me off.  The 3rd time they fixed it, it lasted until the next day.  Then the seas parted and the General Manager asked me if I wanted a new bike! :orange: I said hell fire F yeah.  They then turned around and sold my first one without checking it again to someone else.  The same thing happened.  Now there are lawyers involved.  Turned out the flywheel was shot.  :soapbox: I know chit happens, but after all that, the Service Manager got promoted and I take my bike to a different Stealer.  So far so good after 18 months and only 6700 miles.   ;D  Dean.

I use Amsoil Syn and used Mobil 1 syn brfore that. I use Amsoil Syn and used Mobil 1 syn brfore that. Love the stuff and won't be changing it out to a hybrid cocktail of 20w-60 with half a shot of espresso and 3/4 of a cup of tomato soup, or whatever the latest trend is. I believe we had a thread that linked all the oils and broke them down. It was done by some pointy heads. Later,Q
Q, So what was the reason for switching from Mobil1 to Amsoil ?

My non scientific reply is that I do not think that you can determine the protection aspect of the oil by its appearance (visual viscosity)or even by oil pressure alone.  You could get water to run thru an engine at 30 PSI but it wouldn't have any lubrication properties.

my 2 cents. :)

I think I agree with that one Phil. But it's not like I'd be running water thru it. Dino oil worked well for over 100 years and only got better and better. I'm sure it provides adequate lubricating properties. I see nothing wrong with using it, especially if it raises idle OP. And ya can't say HD designed it for syncrap either. I ain't got no HD motor!!! ;D ;) :2vrolijk_21:

I'm old school and used to runnning straight viscosity oil, not multi viscosity.  You pick the weight by temp. and driving conditions.  That worked for a long time, but because of non mechanical customers it was made it dummy proof.

BTW, I just changed to Redline Shokproof for the tranny.  That stuff is unreal.  Three weeks later and it hasn't yet run off the funnel.  It sticks.  It must be great protection.

Yes indeed.  I'm not so sure I would condemn the oil for the "low" oil pressure either.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that Fueling pump and plate supposed to be the magical answer to that issue?  At least if you read and believe the hype it is.  Of course, if you keep increasing the viscosity of the fluid as the pump wears or the bypass valve sticks you can maintain pressure a little longer, but eventually you'll need to address the real issue.  BTW, why was the oil pressure OK back in the hottest days of summer, but now it sucks?

Oh yeah, if you don't like that low pressure at idle, bump the idle up to 1500-2000 rpm.  That should take care of the problem.  Or do like I do to thicken a sauce or gravy, just add a little flour. ::)

The drop in pressure at elevated temps I'm told by Feuling is due to some wear in the camplate, and possibly the OP too. I know that's cause of how I ride. Gotta be wearing something running WFO all the time. 11K on the motor now. The stocker used to do it from day 1 when hot. This was the first time. And I wasn't using any HD junk in this motor. Call it hype if ya like, but their reputation for racing quality parts is why I used it. And their service is excellent. They're fully standing behind it and will replace it if it can't be brought back to spec by them. AT NO CHARGE. Can't ask a vendor to do more than that. Especially the way I beat on it! ;)

Will change every 2K and think that will take care of my motor better than that synthetic crap!!! ;)

Hoist! 8)

Hoist,, Your Right!!! I've notcied that a few years ago and thats why i've always stuck with Dino. But remember, if you get above the 275 mark pull over and let her coold down. The Dino will break down rather quick and rend itself usless between 275-300 and I wouldnt run too long at 265. I've been at 275 a couple times in 100 plus weather and heavy traffic.

OK, flushed the syncrap out with some dino oil today. Put in 3 qts of 20/50 dino, and 2/3 qt of 60wt, for my oil cocktail mix! Bike only got as high as 225 degF and idle oil never dropped below 15 psig. So far this little experiment is doing what we had hoped for. I'll be taking it to ME next Fri for the weekend, and change the oil again on Mon before leaving for MV on Tues. But right now, I'm liking what I see. :2vrolijk_21:

There was some discussion also that the syncrap is so slippery that when heated and gets thin, it actually slides thru ball bearings (between bearing and race and the adjacent balls) that the balls don't spin. This supposedly caused flat spots on the balls because they weren't spinning. The oil slides between the ball and race/adjacent balls! More I hear about it, no matter how good the lubricating characteristics are, the more I'm convinced that our antique engines don't need that stuff! Just change the dino oil every 2000 miles instead!!! So, FTS!!! ;)

Anyone want to bet whether it's Howie or Cybils marbles that are the problem ::) ?

I've ridden through Manhatten with Howie in a cage. I can assure you his marbles are fine. It's all the other people who's lost their marbles.

there have been some good oil discussions on vtf and htt lately...some of the heavy hitters like hillside and r&r are using dino, either torco or spectro straight 60 weight...they claim that it resists foaming/aeration, thereby providing a better cooling effect...also reduces the noise from aggressive cam/heavy valvespring setups...thinking of trying it myself

Ask 50 bikers about oil and you'll get 50 different answers so I guess you should use what you think is best for you scoot and let others use what they want. I'm hooked on M1 V-twin and maybe I don't ride my bike as hard as you but I don't think I'm slow by any means, then again I love my bikes too much to trash them till they fall apart. I enter a few sprints on the softy and do OK.

Had the same issue w/ dino on my TW 88. Going through Chitown, hot as heck, loaded down 2 up, sitting and burning up, oil pressure dropped to zero. Sit for 1/2 hour under a bridge and on down the road. Gotta believe that a good syn beats a good dino.

Ok, here's the deal. Today was in the upper 90's. Did between 85-100 for about 1-1/2 hours. OT was 241 degF. OP at idle was 10 psig. Rode home a little slower and it was hotter than hell out. Then got stuck in bad traffic on the GWB. Split lanes the whole way, but very slow go! Got home and OT was 249 degF. OP was 10 psig at idle. I know it's fresh oil, but so far I like what I'm seeing. Not keen on OT getting much above 275 with the dino oil, but I don't expect those temps anyway. I'd shut the bike off first if for some reason it got that hot! ;)

I rode all weekend as well. Oil temps got up to 265 in the slow mountain twisties. Running Amsoil, the oil pressure never got below 13 at idle. (Fueling oil pump). I gotta wonder if oil is your issue.  8)

Howie,
I have to agree with others.  I think there's more too it than just the difference between synthetic and dino oil. I've run synthetic in my bikes since they came out with it (I run Mobil 1) and have never had the issues that you're having.  I ride in some of the worse traffic conditions outside of NYC and that's DC rush hour traffic.  My oil has never gone above 280 and my oil pressure, with the stock 07 oil pump, continually runs right around 10 psi at idle, even with ambient air temps up over 100 degrees.  This is by far a much better level than my 02 Ultra had.  (At idle and in rush hour traffic, it would barely be above 0 psi.)  I remember back in the days when if you told someone that your Hog didn't leak oil, they'd ask you if you were running it dry.  I'm not sure you're not covering up a bigger issue/problem than oil here. Not a thing Smiler...it's great oil.  I use Mobil 1 for the same reason that Miker does;  easier to find when you're on the road than Amsoil.  Just about every auto store and a lot of WalMart's carry Mobil 1 V-Twin.  Just a case of convenience.

I'm going to have to go with the Syn crowd on this one. All the API test I've seen and the documentation I've seen show that Syn is much more stable a temp than dino oil. Dino starts to breakdown almost immediately when the temp is increased.  This is why they talk about extended oil change intervals with syn oils, they are more stable and don't breakdown near as fast as dino, they may not show noticeable breakdown for thousands of miles.

Mobil-1 with 30% lucas  oil additive....Took some Twin cam rattle away..70,000 miles and does not burn a drop.
I use the same in my evo..But ran Dino oil for 16 years with no issues either.
To each his own..Only reason I started to run Mobil-1 is cause of all the twin cam noise!!!! :nixweiss:

That is why we use it combustion turbines...Big serious machines with expensive results with poor lubrication.
I have much better metals results using synthetic...

Did youze really expect me to believe I'd have anyone agree with me on this decision? ::)

Except maybe Hub, from what I've heard him say here. :2vrolijk_21:

But I've been running dino oil in every engine my whole life, until I got this bike that is. You've converted me on the Redline Shockproof Tranny Oil, and I REALLY like that stuff. The Redline MTL seems fine in the primary too. But never had one issue with dino motor oil in any vehicle I've ever owned. Not til synthetic have I noticed anything oil related at all. And the dino oil seemed to improve things. Ya'll think it might be another problem, but the bike runs great still. The running OP is perfectly normal at 40-45 psig. And if my hot idle OP stays at 10 psig, I see no reason to question this further. It'll only further support the thinning argument against syncrap!

Since I plan on changing the dino oil every 2K miles, oil breakdown doesn't concern me. And this chit is so much cheaper too! Changing more often won't cost me any more than I'm spending now. Funny how that dino oil was fine for EVERYONE, until the hype about synthetic became all the rage. Because it doesn't breakdown like dino oil, it allows you to keep it in longer. Beyond that, I see no other real benefit. And if it physically thins above 235 degF, I'd rather not have flat spots on my balls from it, or the racket the motor makes with that chit in there!!! ::) ??? ;D ;D ;D ;)

::) ??? ;D ;D ;D ;)

Hoist! 8)

All my lawn equipment runs dino, the Oldster is 60 straight dino, my F250 is a blend as is the CRD Jeep....

I deep fry in Pnut though...Higher smoke temp., you know...

All in all I don't GAS about who uses what...Easy huh?

I've been running Amsoil in my bikes for the past 10 - 12 years and have great luck with their oil. I've also ran Mobile 1 and Syn 3 on the same bike which means using the same temp gauge.  My scooter seems to run 10 to 15 degrees cooler than it did with  either the Syn 3 or Mobile 1.  Anyone here in California knows that difference in engine temp can make a  world of difference when its a hot day in Calif

Bearings skipping on syn is such a bunch of hooey. Anyone that's done even a little research should know that. I can't believe this mis-information is still propagated.  ;)

So, I hear HD Syn3 is a syn/dino blend.  Guess that would be the ultimate.

hoist, just switched to straight 50 dino...like it already...less noise with the hopped up valvetrain and seems to rev quicker...maybe there's less aeration going on

IMHO If you change your oil and filter at 2500 to 3000 miles you will be fine with any quality Dino oil. If you want to stretch those oil changes you better be using Syn oil. I also believe you should use Syn if your pumping lots of hard use HP. The heat will get you every time.

There's a great tech article in the current issue of American Iron.  It discusses the differences between dino and syn and puts a lot of myths to rest about which oil is better for air-cooled v-twins. It's a good read and will open a few eyes maybe.   :nixweiss:  (Syn oil is stated to be better over any dino oil.)

syn definitely has it's advantages like longevity, heat sensitivity, etc...however dino may aerate (foam) less and when you're running aggressive cams and heavy valvesprings, a heavy straight weight dino will muffle the noise...some of the most well respected builders out there (hillside and r&r) recommend spectro or torco dino in all their motors

Howie, there.s two good articles in this months American Iron, first on page 40, is about oil coolers, but talks a lot about dino/syn. The second is an the 09 CVO's page 66.

If you don't run really hot and you change at reasonable intervals - there is probably negligible difference - BUT if you get hot one day your dino oil is going to trashed.

I can only say that my dad was in the high performance lubrication field for racing and construction for most of his adult life after leaving the USMC - and he swore by synthetic.  There were few folks with as much experience, like real on the job site and at the race track.  He was reading industry rags right up until he died...and when I was there this past spring to visit him folks were calling him with questions about lubrication for their vehicles.

Your MC - do whatcha want.  I'll run synthetic.
