2011 "NEW" Rear Brake Rotor (BURNT)
« on: December 05, 2010, 11:59:55 AM »

I took this picture so i can see how to replace the tail light lens. Looking at this picture closely I notice that the REAR Brake Rotor has a burnt mark in the center of the rotor. Almost like it has overheated at some point. The bike has not left the dealership yet and went from the create to the mechanics jack. Is this normal and will it go away with normal riding or do I have a defective rotor?

Thanks in advance.

Mano.

It's hard to tell from the picture if that's a heat mark or discoloration from lubrication.  I don't know if the MOCO lubes new brake pads like the car guys to or not...  It's something to take a closer look at - see if it wipes off or not.  If it is a heat mark, most certainly have the dealership address it before you take it home...

If it is a heat mark, which it looks to me it is,it had to happen when the bike was taken on it mandatory test ride at the factory. Definitely needs to be looked at by the dealer. If it were mine that rotor would be replaced and whatever caused it as well.
Good luck and keep us informed. Congrats on your new bike.   :2vrolijk_21:

I did rub my thumb on the rotor and i do know that it is heat for sure. I plan to go back tomorrow night hopfully the dealer will step up and say something. The inspection of the bike should be done by then since i take possession of the bike Thursday.

Things that have crossed my mind is....stuck piston in the caliper or brake pads too thick. I do not think that it would be the ABS stuck on but who knows. The scary part is that if that calaper was holding and the pads where rubbing that much there would have been that brake pad smell for sure and they just boxed the bike and let it go without correcting the problem before it left the Harley Assembly plant. Not cool. :-\

Burning brake smell?? That would be "normal" in the MoCo's eyes.......

Is there as smell from the sintered metal pad?  It isn't like the automotive lining.  Also pretty hard to get the caliper onto the disc if the pads are too thick-requires a really large hammer.  Remember there is no return springs in a disc brake setup-rotor runout causes the pad to "return" to its clearance position.  May have a tight piston, pinched line, wrong fluid in system.  Better yet, take it back to the dealer and have him till you that it is normal-PRICELESS. :P

I'm going to make a prediction, and for your sake I hope to be proven wrong.  I'll predict the dealer will tell you there's nothing wrong - they have to wear in and the high spots get more heat when they do - they've seen this on new bikes often - any number of excuses.   Take a look at every other disk in the showroom and see if your's is the only one.

And just because it may roll around the showroom floor easily doesn't mean it won't slowly (or not so slowly) drag you to a stop while you are riding and it heats up.  Rear wheel not aligned?

I'd have them jack it up while I spin the wheel, look for runout, then hit brake, feel the drag.  it's not normal.

Went by the dealership today. They have not finished there inspection but i did point it out to the shop manager. I will wait till they are done but the more i look at this the more i realize this is not right. I did look at about 10 other bikes. None of them had the same heat markings on the rotors.

Was at the dealership tonight and Gecko you win the prize. :orange:

I talked with the mechanic that is working on my bike and he told me that it will come off. He slightly sanded the rotor and it came off. He could not explain what it was though. He pointed out that the front rotors also had the same markings but have come off when the front brakes where applied. You could see the slight markings on the rotor. The bike is still a part and the accessories are still being installed so it has not been started yet. He also has not completed his inspection. He assured me that if there was anything wrong it will be corrected especially something like brakes. He looked like a stand up guy so i will let the process take it's coarse and wait for the final result.

I looked at about 10 other bikes on the floor. They did not have the same markings as mine.

That is a for sure. If those rotors are still marked when i get there there is now way i will take it......I want them to be shiny like all the bikes on the showroom floor.

OK.....So i went to the Toronto Motorcycle Show yesterday and i seen a 2011 CVO SG on the floor and it had the same marks/burn stain on the rotors. It was not as bad but you can see it was there. There is too much snow, ice and salt on our roads so this could have started coming off just by pushing the bike around and appling the brakes. After the show i had to go to the west end of the city and i stopped in to a Harley dealership where there was a 2011 CVO Ultra and yes it had it too. Are they doing something different with the CVO's? :nixweiss:.

Just thinking out the box here... wonder what a new (never installed) rotor would look like? Might be worth it the next time you're at the dealership to ask the P/A people if they have any in stock. :nixweiss:

Actually i did ask to see one if they had it and they told me it could take up to 8 months before they have any in stock.

Just wondering if any other 2011 CVO owners have noticed this?

So my bike came home today. When I spotted the rotors at the dealership the odometer showed 2 KM. My ride arrived in a truck with 14 km. I went up and down the street a few times and to the gas station so i can top her up for the winter. She now has 18 km. Got a good look at the rotors and they are cleaning up. The heavy burn marks are gone. :nixweiss: I have seen 3 CVO's they all had this. Every other Harley did not. They must be doing something in York P.A.

My 2011 SESG had a terrible drag on the front wheel when it was up on the lift so I removed the calipers and inserted a wide bladed screwdriver and pushed the pads back and reinstalled. An instant fix and I check both wheels for a reasonably free spin every time I lift it up for a wash
