Cartridge front fork job. Has any one upgraded?
« on: November 15, 2011, 10:53:43 PM »

Has any one upgraded the forks on their Ultra to the double cartridge kit?  did it make a difference? is it worth it?

I changed to the Progressive monotube on the front suspension. Well worth the money for the upgrade & should have done long ago. Totally different bike w/ newsuspension.

I also changed the rears to the Progressive 940. No more air shocks for me...

Just had this done to my :pumpkin: ('04 SEEG) also... hardest thing for me was getting bike to/from shop. :D :D Haven't had a chance to ride it yet (still at shop) but the guy putting doing the installation told me no more nose dive when hitting the brakes and going over bumps are "smooth" transition now. I also had the neck bearings and races checked/greased, fall away checked, and installed the Tru-Trak ride stabilizer.

The same thing I have planned for my '08.....but with almost 50k miles on it I think I'll do the motor mounts and suspension bushings as well.....gonna take over a bay in the garage and do a ton of stuff to the bike...660 install, heat demons.....and more!

I wonder if there is some kind of fork brace for touring bikes? When I give the bars a fast shake back and forth  ( while at rest ) the front wheel kind of giggles back and forth on its own. Almost feels like the bolts on the triple clamps are loose!! I checked all the bolts and they are tight. So I assume this is normal? But a fork brace will fix that looseness. I don't know if a fork brace for that bike exists.

Most of that is due to the rubber mounted handlebars.  You can make the fork brace for the 41mm Dyna work, but you lose the cowbells and have to make the brace fit the front fender.  The biggest improvement is to get rid of the Showa crap in the forks.

Don't know who makes the HD cartridges, and don't know anyone that's tried them yet.

Installed PS Cartridge forks with 940s on my SEEG...  It made a marked difference in the overall ride of the bike...  The difference noticed most was when in sweeping turns, like on a highway onramp or offramp. The bike felt more in control and connected to the road.  Would I do it again?  You bet!  What you end up with is a suspension systems that actually works...

Picking bike up tomorrow.... don't do that much two up riding and it'll probably not be until next spring until I do (BSR doesn't like cold).

This place has about the best price, if you consider that you don't pay tax or shipping.  $264.95 for the standard height version.

I was on call and had somebody covering for me while I picked the bike up so I didn't have as much time as I would have liked, however I did make one stop. When I left my mechanics shop I stopped by the dealership to spend some reward points that I had accumulated there. I did have some fun on a few sweeping ramps getting on/off interstate/highway.

The additions I made may not be the best out there... but they are a BIG improvement over stock!!!! Hitting the brakes and not having any nose dive, running over bumps and not knocking the caps out of your fillings from the OEM air shocks bottoming out, and going thru sweeping turns and not filling the "wiggle" that tightens the sphincter muscle are all welcome improvements.

Just to recap what I had done...

Progressive Monotubes
Progressive Ultra 940 Shocks
New motor mounts
New swingarm bushings
Install Tru-Track
Check, Grease neck bearings & races
Check/adjust fallaway of frontend

Good deal, Gary...glad to see you're happy with the upgrades.  With all that done, I'll bet the bike feels like it's on rails now in comparison.  You'll be amazed how quickly you forget how bad the stock stuff is.  With the classic SE bike like you have, it's money well spent, IMO.

Hell, I still miss my '06, even though in a lot of ways, I like the SERGU a lot better...I had the '06 damn near perfect for me when the chit hit the fan.  I was looking at some pictures today of my old bike after I had done all the stuff to it...it was one of a kind.   :( :'(

But change is a good thing.  Glad you got the Pumkin' up to snuff again.  :2vrolijk_21:

It does feel much better!!! I told my mechanic that everyone has been talking so much about the '09 frame change and how much better the ride was and if I could get mine to ride like an '08.75 that would be close enough to an '09 and a lot cheaper. ;D It had been a while since I'd given the :pumpkin: some "love" and felt like it was well overdue.

This place has about the best price, if you consider that you don't pay tax or shipping.  $264.95 for the standard height version.

http://www.phatperformanceparts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=PS%2DMONOTUBES&CartID=
Great price, I think they are $339.95 on the Progressive website.

This is where I've gotten all my Progressive shocks from, JC Motors.

They also have the Monotubes for $252.27.

Thanks

How did you know they were "bad"? How long should they last? Seems odd they were both bad.
If they are good enough for Otis they are good enough for me. Great customer service. Just have a few other items on the list to buy first.

Probably 10 thousand miles but i dont think that had anything to do with it i think they were just defective or maybe running with the HILLBILLY ROCKET RIDERS had something to do with it.

Hello Arland i knew they were bad because it had a bounce that started and kept getting worse at Maggie Valley i felt like a rookie trying to keep up.

I changed to the Progressive monotube on the front suspension. Well worth the money for the upgrade & should have done long ago. Totally different bike w/ newsuspension.

I also changed the rears to the Progressive 940. No more air shocks for me...

I also have done this to my Banana. This IS the best mod for the money you will
ever spend on your bike. A must have for all Harley's. Nuff said.

OK,
I just went to the Progressive web site, and all they list is the spring length.  I've got a 2005 SEEGII that has been lowered from the factory.  What size (or length) do I need to order??  Where is the least expensive??  Any thoughts??

dOOD,
Thanks for the input, does JP or another retailer have a better price on them?  I'm out looking for speakers right now.  I'm tinking Polk Audio.  Any thoughts??  I do have the Hawg Wired amp (Just the fronts) but the right speaker is blown (I really never liked them to begin with).

My "indy" got mine (and installed) for me and he's a Drag dealer/distributor so more than likely they came from there. As far as the stereo stuff you got me I'm still using HogTunes Speakers w/stock stereo. :(

Gary, Thanks for the input.  I do think I'll do the PS front end, and try the Polk audio for sound at this point, I haven't heard anything with more positive feedback yet.  What is the stock height for our bikes?  Is it the 11.5 (Lowered) or a bit higher??  I know that 13" is standard, just don't know where I'm at.

Good luck don't think you'll be sorry with the results. :2vrolijk_21: If memory serves me right as you mentioned stock height is 13" and 1" lowered (as ours are) would be 12". I also did the Progressive Ultra 940 Shocks and by their description...

The Ultra Touring shocks utilize all the suspension travel provided by these 13" eye to eye units, but provide a 1" lowered ride height.

would further confirm that. My bike sits as it did stock but rides 100X better now!!!

If you go by the part # from that add (JC Motors Part# 31-2500) and match those up with the P/N #'s from Progressive those are the stock height not the lowered (31-2501) that he needs.

So who did you end up ordering from and how much did you pay?

The front end is on my list to do as well.

Thanks

Steve I purchased from these guys.

I went with stock height but they do have the 1" lower that the SEEG's were built with.

Is it worth doing the fronts and doing the rear at a later time? My slow time of year so don't want to spend too much $$$ at one time.

I went with Ricor valves in my front end, but have bought many parts from Phat Performance, great prices and quick delivery.

I did the rear last year before going to Tahoe.
I will do the fronts as a small winter project.

Yes...IMO, the front is more important in a lot of ways than the rear.

X2... Had a local shop do the front, with a big difference in ride... Then ordered rears and was a job I could handle.

All is good...Lovin the setup now.

Steve...not answering for Brad, but I'd put new Bushings (minimal cost) and Seals in at the same time.  Your bushings will be well worn, and they are cheap for a HD part.  And of course, new fork oil.

Steve not tied to upgrading the front suspension but does a play a part in the suspension persay... when I did my front/rear suspension I also replaced the motor mounts and swing arm bushings. I was told/read that if these items were worn they could play a role in how your suspension felt/handled.

The swing arm bushing was done less than 3k ago and I think the front motor mount has been done twice now.

If you're installing the Progressive Monotubes, the recommended fork oil is 10W.  It only takes 5oz per side.  Even if you're not doing the Monotubes, use 10W.  The SE fork oil, is too heavy, IMO.  I'm not 100% sure, but I think it is at least 15w.  It will make the suspension more unresponsive.

Whatever you use, get some high quality synthetic fork oil...it will last twice as long.

Traxxion Dynamics uses 7wt syn, but their cartridges work differently than the monotubes.

Speaking of Traxxion Dynamics  how do the monotubes compare with there AK-20s? I know the price differance and they are differant types of suspension, but on a day to day basis how do they compare?

I've got both and use them regularly.  AK-20 in an 05 SEEG and monotubes in a 2000 SERG.  The AK-20 are better.  A little.  But it's not a lot of difference.  After riding both for awhile and needing to do one or the other in the legs for a different bike I chose the monotubes for that project.  Both are very good.  For the price difference I couldn't justify the small difference for the AK-20s on the SERK project.

I've heard it expressed on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being Traxxion's AK-20 Cartridges.  The Progressives would be a 7.  I've just heard that, as I have no first hand experience with either the new HD Cartridges or the Progressive Monotubes, but have had the Traxxion on three different bikes now.

Longevity will be another thing to consider, but I don't think anyone's had the Progressive's on long enough to be able to know that yet.  It's kind of a mute point with the Progressives, as they have a lifetime warranty on the parts.  Basically, anything at all is better than the stock stuff, by light years.

It's a subjective scale of course Terry.  But, at least on my bikes, I don't feel that much difference between the two.

If a bike from my old hard tail days with a squishy springer-esque front end was a zero, a stock bike with the standard crap was a five and the Traxxions were a 10 for the front end on this scale-of-our-own I'd have to give the monotubes an 8.5 at least.  There's just not a lot of difference in feel between the two.

If I were rating on ride alone I'd give close to a 9 right now.  Mark them down just a bit not for ride but for the lack of adjustability we do get with the AK-20s.

Thanks for answering my question. With all the positive feedback on the Progressives I was having a hard time seeing where the more expensive ak-20s would be worth the price differance. My main complaint with the stock setup is brake dive and the squishy feeling in curves. Seems like the PMs handle that well enough.

Hope this coming year is the best for all of us.  Blessings

Santa was a little late this year!  I ordered my monotubes on Friday, they showed up today, so Saturday will be the big day to get the speakers done and the new front end put together.  Other than fork oil and new seals is there anything else I should look at while the front end is apart??  I thought neck bearings while it's apart......any thoughts??  Don/Gary, thanks for your help along the way :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

If they show any where at all that's the time to replace the sliders as well.  If for no other reasons than because they're cheap and you're there.
