Gerbing .... Jackets vs Liners??
« on: September 13, 2010, 12:49:14 PM »

With fall here and winter in the near future up here in the great white north, I have been looking at picking up some heated gear. Can you folks who have used the heated gear opine as to the real world pros and cons of using the heated jacket/pants vs the heated liners? Any suggestions as to connectivity? I've read some use Powerlet products. There seems to be new technology ... ie Micro Wire ...

Thanks,

Howie

many options for power, start with the jacket/liner then work your plug choices around that.

you can check http://www.heatedclothingoutlet.com/index.shtml for some deals on gerbing

take a ride this week and visit http://countryrode.com/main/index.php they are a gerbing dealer

Ride naked in the snow Howie.  Prove that your Super Tough.

Not being Super Tough I like the heated gear.  Don't use the heated pants often though.  Lined jeans with good long johns beneath are good to 30 degrees or so, especially with the rain gear pulled over them.  Surprisingly that combination really is less cumbersome than dealing with the heated pants.  All day in less than 35 degree weather I'll wear them.  Local riding just never mess with the pants.

I've had the jacket liner for several years.  Under only a middle weight jacket it's good to 25 degrees or so.  The heated gloves start losing the battle at around 25-30 also.  They make riding days easy that otherwise would not be.

Have read of several who have sent their gloves back to Gerbing (gloves same vintage as mine) for some sort of an upgrade to increase their output.  These get me through weather as cold as I'm going to ride for any real distance though.  So have never messed with it.

Do have a Powerlet outlet mounted as a hard point under my left leg.  Makes for an easy connection point for the gear.  Don't know anything about their micro-wire system (in the clothes) other than what's on their website.  That is newer than all my gear.

Since you have a a$$ warmer I feel a heated jacket liner and a themostat control would be all you should need. I tried the heated gloveS and found them to be quite bulky.

I am a believer in layering so the heated long sleeve liner is what i use.  Agree with Twolane's comments regarding the gloves.  I have pigtails installed on the battery and wire tied to convenient locations under the seat.  Never tried heated pants.

Do you remember which glove you tried Brad?  They had something (whose product name I now forget) that was thick and bulky.  It was replaced by their G3 glove.  At least to me the G3 isn't bad at all.  They're offering some things now that wasn't available when I got my G3 gloves.  So might be even better.

Made the ride out to Country Rode BMW earlier this year. They had a very limited selection.

Ride naked in the snow Howie.  Prove that your Super Tough.

I'm curious to know if any members have used the new jacket and if it's more or less bulky then a jacket liner layered with leather jacket and rain jacket  :nixweiss:

I've got the old Gerbings jacket liner and G-3 gloves and worked great for years.  An old timer told me long ago  don't spend money on the pants and socks 'cause if you warm your core it will circulate warm blood to the extremities and this has proven to be right.  Was in Hot Springs this weekend and at the Gerbing booth tried on the new micro wire liner and gloves and I think they'd be MUCH more comfortable because I couldn't feel the wires runnin up and down my arms and back etc.  They are the same prices I paid years ago for mine and still have lifetime warranty.  I've ridden in 18 degrees with wind (before the CVO Heated seat/grips) with jeans long johns, liner and FXRG jacket and gerbing gloves and did 500 mile day (it did warm up to 24 though)no problemo!  Go with the Gerbing liner/gloves

I have one of the micro wire liners and love it.  Works great into the 20's maybe lower.  I also have the outer pants and like them, the Union ridge.  Not really needed until you get 38 or lower or are doing lots of miles in the cold.

The heated gear is great for traveling, leave early in the morning in 26 degrees, and as the day warms turn the thermostat down.  A lot less stops for taking layers off.

I have the new buck model Gerbing heated gloves and really like them, almost too hot on the hands.

So you're discounting the suggestion of riding bare butt naked in the cold?

You could wear a cape?

Could say to anyone that looks,

"I'm Batman!"

For me, I like the jacket liner.  I have the gloves but wear them maybe once per year since they are bulky and I don't like the lack of feel with them on.

The jacket liner works best for me.  Don't buy the vest, get the full jacket liner.
