110 has knock in engine
« on: July 10, 2010, 05:47:17 PM »

Just got home frome trip that I had to trailer my bike ( against my choice but had too) backe out of trailer and cranked up. It had loud knock in engine. Sounded something like a rod but not quite. Shut off and checked oil (ok) Anyone have any thought on the little info I gave you.

My thoughts are, I hope you have a good dealer.
Your about to enter the "110 Danger Zone" .
Do not adjust any knobs or dials.
Take it straight to your dealer.
It's a shame but this could be an interesting adventure or a bad one.
The adventure will start at your dealer.
Regardless of the issue, it's covered by warranty.
I hope your dealer is a good one.
Good luck!

Actually he is a pretty good dealer. I guess I am fortunate. I am going to push in trailer and carry to him next week. I don't want to do any more harm than it has now. I hope it is not serious but if it is no time like the present to find out. 2,500 miles

Had that happen to me when an adjustable push rod backed off on my rear exhaust valve 95in RK. No damage and everything ran fine after resetting the rod but is sure sounded awful.

cranked the bike today to make sure it still had a problem before I carried it to dealer. It is embrassing when you take it in and nothing is wrong. Well guess what it ran like a sewing machine. I know it will probably act up again so I guess it's just a waiting game.

You didn't indicate how many miles you trailered your bike. On two separate I trailered bikes 1500 miles or more. First was my old Wideglide and the wife's Sporty. At first crank I thought they were both coming apart! Figured the vibrations from the trailer allowed most of the lubricants to drain down to the bottom.
After a couple minutes everything quieted down and never had a problem.
Second was both our 08 Springers. Went to N.H. and unloaded mine. Same thing as before. Hers stayed in trailer for two weeks until we met up in Virginia same scenario. I just expected it the second time and let them idle a couple minutes while the lifters and topend re-lubricated themselves.
I know how you feel as it truly sounds like the whole motor is coming apart, especially in an enclosed trailer.

I trailered it about 500 mile I hope it is the same problem you experienced with all the talk about the 110 I guess I am jut paranoid. It has 2500 miles and has'nt given me any trouble yet. Thanks for the encouragement

Did you leave it in gear you can pump down the lifters if you did.

if you leave bike in gear and the bike moves forward or backwards at all then your rocking the engine. Over a period of time the lifters will bleed down .

I did not know that and yes it was in gear but it was chinched down pretty tight.

i have trailed my bike to daytona many times from new york.i used to leave them in gear.even though they are tied down they still bounce, which rocks the motor and puts pressure on the tranny which is not really good for the bike.you think by leaving it in gear it is better and will not move.now i leave it in neutral and i use a tie wrap on the front brake, but not to tight.
