Retractable cord for the tour pak lid
« on: July 27, 2010, 06:26:13 PM »

Great idea.  Now you don't have to tuck in the cord before you close the tour pak.  It replaces the existing flex cord.  Looks easier to install than even the tour pak hinges.

That was one of the little gadgets I noticed right away also.  Already on order (it sucks sometimes to have four tour paks......).

I'm thinking of getting one of these and mounting the ends to the toilet seat and a clamp over the tank.  To make an automatic seat lowerer with an HD logo :2vrolijk_21: !

Totally amazing.  I sure hope that thing is a lot stronger and more durable than it looks in the pictures.  Reminds me of the retractable tether they gave me with my security badge, back when I had a job.  Worked OK on a lightweight badge for a while, but they did tend to wear out over time.  When one of you gets it, check for country of origin.  Any bets on China?

I'm thinking that the MoCo is missing out on a real winner by not offering pneumatic struts instead.  Just think, they could install electrically operated latches to go with the keyless entry system, and all you'd have to do is press a button and the lid would open automatically.

Might consider chroming your seat to complete the look

$.02:  While this seems like a great idea, I'm skeptical.  HD claims, "When extended to its full length, the strong cord holds the lid open at least 10° past vertical for improved stability and easy packing. Then the device automatically coils the tether cord inside the housing to eliminate pinched cords when closing the lid."

Consider how long this device will last (spring) and the consequences of it's failure.  Mark (Ironhorse) suffered a broken cable and it was disastrous:  If your bike has a tour pack I suggest you read this.  Especially since this cable allows to top to go beyond vertical, I would not trust it!  :nervous:   :nervous:  For $30,  I'll deal with the regular cable.   :nixweiss:   :nixweiss:

If anyone feels the need for something other than the stock cable (not cord, but cable), I'd recommend the solid metal device sold by eglide goodies over a spring loaded key chain type of device like this.  I get the feeling H-D is selling this as a way to increase sales of T-P lids.

Doesn't the stock cable also go past vertical?

Sure.  Just like this new one does.  If not lid would crash closed at the slightest bump.

That was kinda my point.  Saying it opens past vertical is not a reason to discount it.  I am curious as to whether this retractable is a stronger cable that stock.

After reading about the tour pack cable breaking, we should Group Buy the Eglide Goodies device.

:'(  I wouldn't want to have that problem as described above.   I was wondering/hoping that this new tether cord deal could possibly be mounted to back (aft) side of the tour pak to act as a (secondary) "backup" tether to the exisiting (stock) one.

When I mount an extra bag on the tour pak (rack), and load it up...........it gets heavy and when you need to open the tour pak lid,  I'm not liking the extra (strain) that the one restrain is holding.   If that were to break,  I'd have the same kinda problem as mentioned above........ :confused5:

I've gotten a 2nd tether that I had intended to install as a backup, just haven't gotten around to it.  In addition, when I load up the tour pack lid, I always hold the lid when opening it.

I think I remember Bob having one of those arms and really liking it.  I'm not a big fan of eglide goodies though and had heard others comment less than favorably about what may have been earlier versions of the part.  It was all enough to keep me from ever looking hard.

Tether is the least of my worries on a heavily loaded tour pak.  Seen the sides break out around the hinges far more often than ever saw a tether line break.

I saw Mark's the day it happened and it wasn't pretty, tore the fiberglass around the hindges all apart. After 05 the TP's are made out of ABS and pretty much junk if the cable breaks. This would be cheap insurance for the later model bikes. I've seen the metal one and just didn't know where to get it. Thanks for the link.  Doc

I agree with Greg. I think you might be asking for it. Heck how many retractable iron cords work after a few times. Those of you that iron would know what I'm talking about  :huepfenlol2: Good luck.   :)

It requires drilling holes in the tour pack and using special rivets (not included) to attach.

Here's a great "new" product from the MoCo and a lot cheaper than the piano hinge many have switched to.

It requires drilling holes in the tour pack and using special rivets (not included) to attach.

I'm thinking I'm out if I have to do all that

Just in case some of you misunderstood what SteveFLHTK was talking about, the one that requires drilling several holes is the folding metal brace from eglide goodies, not the retractable cord that is the subject of this thread.  That one just attaches to the stock points in place of the stock cable.

I mentioned the one from eglide goodies in an earlier post as being something I would be much more likely to trust than the new retractable cord that looks like an oversized security badge cord.  And drilling a few small holes for pop rivets is no big deal.  It's the same method used by the manufacturer to attach the hinges and latches to the TP.  I believe you will find that it's all hidden behind the passenger backrest if you're worried about appearance.

just undo either the top or bottom of the oem tether and twist it one time, it will coil intself into the TP. if it coils outward, then twist it in the other direction. never had an issue with it.

Don't even have to undo it.  It'll loop on it's pivot point.

I installed one and it works great. Very nice piece of gear and no more worries over the cord not be properly stored in the tour pack. :2vrolijk_21:

Works great!
