Maybe a stupid question....
« on: May 06, 2007, 04:37:15 PM »

When it comes to loading a base map on my TMax/AT, there isn't one that comes close to my configuration - which one should I use?  Stock with RYO A/C, V&H Dresser Dual headers, SE Mufflers (65115-98B).

Thanks d00d. I realised no replies there and had to hope for PMs - I didn't know where else to post since for that topic it says "request maps here"!!  :confused5:

Hi Jacques,

Yes, I looked at 357 and 377, but I don't think they are very close!  Headers are wrong (too big), mufflers are wrong (too unrestricted) and air cleaner is wrong (too big)!

Good morning Jim,

After discussions with other members for mine :
Dresser duals and Oval slip-ons V&H, RYO A/C : The advises were these maps.

Yet, I've not order my TM/AT but I was curious to look the map.
Also, you'll read other informations in this thread : http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=11999.0;all

TM/AT install

Well, in the absence of any other suggestions except Jacques', I went with map 377.

Went very easily after that, uploaded the base map, and let it do the IAC, and that was that.

Would someone who's done this be kind enough to answer a couple of simple questions?

1) After the IAC has been autocorrected, the instructions tell you to manually align the blocks before and after the autocorrected ones, to make them a straight line to the first, and after the last, autocorrected blocks.  Mine seemed fine already, not needing touched (although that screen, and hence the dots, is very small so it's hard to tell!) - is that normal, and acceptable?

2) I assume that's it, and (having checked that it's all set to closed loop) I just ride and let it tune?  If map 377 was far enough off though, I assume that it will take a few miles to get things right, because of the 5% (session) learning, but the 20% (max) learning will get it there in the end?

Cheers,   :drink:

Hi Jim - did you weld up the o2 sensors?
Let me know how you get on.  I wanted to put the TMAT on mine but the dealership will only fit VHFueler so it may be something I 'll do after the warranty

Hi Smiler.

No, I have the 02 sensors working as they should (essential for the TMAT) - Zippers supply replacement wideband ones.

Good evening Smiler,

If you put the TM/AT, you need not your dealer.
But, if your dealer puts VH fueler, he assume the warranty.
Not easy to decide !!!!   :-\

Good evening, Dave !

Yes ! it's the most simple if you forget not to download the right map in the TM/AT.
I say that it's the most simple because in Europe we've not experimented dealers same in States for tuning and it's not easy to found a Dyno ( each time it's more money)

Your TM/AT will learn during the first miles and adjust the best compromise between TQ and HP.

Other advantage : if you change the cams or other, you download the Map from Zipper's website and you run again with the new best compromise. The Maps are regularly updated and are free.

Last point : with the wide band sensors and TM/AT, the adjustements are avalaible for all conditions of use.

Personnally, I think that it's the best product on the market for the best compromise.

It'll be different if you wish a very high TQ or HP. In this case, you need a tuner and dyno.

Best regards
Jacques

No worries Dave. As probably the first european to install a TMAT I can assure you it's really, really easy!

Yes, I'm beginning to be a bit disappointed in the way so many of our US bros just don't bother to respond to our posts. Maybe they think we are just "furriners"
 :(

Lots of them must have done the Tmax install - we know they have - but none of them has bothered to reply.  I posted several times asking Bubba about his horn - no response. I PM'd HD-Dude asking about oil - no reply.  :( :( :( :( :(

I was starting to think my posts were invisible to everyone except me.

Thanks goodness for all the good guys on here - (plenty of you, you know who you are guys!) - who DO respond to us when they can, but as for the rest...... well maybe they just don't like us. :'( :'( :'(

EQCons,

Not everyone has done their own install so I would not cast such a black cloud on the members.  I know a number of the guys had Zippers do the install for them at a bike event or had a shop do it.   I would send a PM to Rhino as he has done this many many times as he is always playing with a map.   I never got that far with mine, because I was the first 110 with compression releases they tried the autotune on at Biketoberfest in Daytona 06 and we realized that we kept blowing fuses.   After that they realized AT needed to be fixed to support compression releases.   I can only comment on the cycling of the IAC and how to adjust the map, not whether you have to flat line it and then let it adjust from there.   After Rhino had his rockerboxes repaired and the new cam put in we installed the 575 map and did not flatten out anything at the dealer with his laptop.  We cleared out all the old settings and loaded the map and did the AIC adjustment then we temp cycled till 189 degrees and then shut it off.

Most of my stupid questions here get stupid answers.  Never bothers me, for the obvious reason.

Never installed TM/AT myself so no help from here.

Those of us in the states are foreignors to those not in the states.

And I don't know any of the furriner posters who live in places other than the US well enough to not like them.

Yet. ;D

AJ's doing a good job of playing coy! ::)

They got the software and documentation today from Dynojet and were setting everything up today. He had my back wheel off to do the rotor, spacers, and pulley cover when I spoke to him at 1PM. They need to fix the headlight wiring they reversed when doing the handlebars, and clearance the brake pedal. This was all supposed to be completed today. They plan to do the Dyno Tune tomorrow. I hope to be there for that. That bike's getting picked up tomorrow evening, no matter what! I'll let you know how the tune went and try to get the chart up tomorrow night. Hoist! 8)

You know I still love you, guys! ;) I can make stuff up about the TMAT if you'd like! I have a Power Commander. C'mon, give us Yankees another chance. Ask me something else! ::) Hoist! 8)

You gave me the best laugh of the day, H!  :orange:

I can post this:

I had Zippers install mine. I've got no idea. I would have given than reply days earlier if I had a PM.

Thanks, HB - I appreciate the reply either way!   :2vrolijk_21:

Hey, maybe I didn't get replies because I'm on double-double secret probation!  Do you think? ;)  Or maybe you can't tell me.....  :orange: Or you could tell me but then you'd have to kill me! :nervous:  Me? paranoid? Nah!   :P

Thanks UnB.  That's just the sort of reply I wanted - but I'm not casting a black cloud on all the members, as there are - as I said - lots of good guys who do reply (you've just done it, for example!) - but there are lots who don't, and as I say, I've even sent PMs and not had a reply at all.   >:(

Jim

Since we changed to the new software you have to go to your profile and readmin your pm status. If you did not do that you won't be notifed when you get a response. maybe that could explain the non-response? Just a thought

Thanks Wayne - no, not that.  I do get PMs regularly, so I'm always checking that there are no new ones against the "MY MESSAGES" tab on the toolbar.

Brain surgery, nuclear physics? NOW you're talking about something I understand. Go ahead, ask me something about it. A little brain surgery on the side, how else could I afford to be a General Contractor with a CVO? Just take a look at my buddy deepsoutheagle. At one time he was a little "touched".

That's the reason for my trip to Kentucky, Jim. I have an appointment with H/B for a lobotomy! :nixweiss:

I'll leave the Particle Accelerator one to H/B as well. Besides being a brain surgeon, he's a nuclear physicist and a real rocket scientist too! ::)

Glad to be of assistance. As far as the DO's, I'll need a little more time. As far as the DO NOTS, I have a list that should help you get off on the right track.

Do NOT let the local government know about it.
Do NOT reset the rev limiter on the accelator.
Do NOT eat the tomatoes from the garden after the trial run. How do you think deepsoutheagle got a little touched?
Do NOT point it at the neighbor's house. Best if the discharge end is pointed skywards.

You're slick. You caught me.

I actually did a lot of work on my family tree a few years ago. There is one gray area around the 1700's. If I could prove that connection I can trace the rest of the tree back to Derryville eons ago. The only reason I brought up 11 or 1200, there's a guy with my last name that was supposedly the Founder of Derryville Ireland. War hero, money, power. That just doesn't jive with my family as I know it, horsethiefs, renegades, and share croppers. SO, that gray area .....Well--just makes me wonder.

I can't recall my tree and the dates but somewhere back in the old woodpile is Andrew Jackson once they got on this side of the pond.

My aunt visited Ireland and went to the home of some shirt tail relatives.  Times were tough in the 60's and I think she never stayed in touch.  Too bad really, that would be a connection not many families have made after hundreds of years.

Jim

Jim, just saw a PM reading "go look at this thread."  Just hadn't noticed it.  I've done the TM install on my bike and one other now.  Only through the basic setup procedured on both and a bit more tinkering on mine after the fact.  But not a lot.

May not be able to offer a lot of insight or support but glad to help if I can.  So if there's a question still unanswered offer it up again.  Will either dazzle with brilliance or make up some chit involving martians and left handed spanners.

Last night I was having this dream about maps for TM/AT.  Incredible HP & Torque numbers most tuners only dream about.  When I woke up I realized that I know almost everything there is to know about the subject.

As long as I am asleep.

If I am napping I can answer all your questions.

I hope that helps, Jim.

First off, being in the UK you'll have metric spanners.  I didn't think of it.  Martians are like Americans (or is that Americans are like Martians?), they don't use metric tools unless they have to.  So the frakking Martians will be no help to us on anything European.  They're just bastards that way.

On your #1.  From my experience yes, it's normal and acceptable.  You'd line it up if it wasn't "fine" already.  If it is then you're just that much farther along.  On my own I had to tweak the tail end of the line.  But only slightly.  On the other one I did the ends of the line had already walked toward each other and continued in a nice fluid line.

On your #2, yes again.  The closer is the base map the quicker will be the learning curve.  On the red bike the base map seemed to be pretty close to begin with.  I still noticed it "learning" for the first 500 miles or so.  Most dramatically at first.  Then slightly as time and miles passed.

If yours does as mine did you'll notice it continually start a bit easier as the learning curve grows.  Idle will smooth out.  Acceleration curves will feel smoother.  It's actually an interesting process to notice if you're paying attention to it.

Don,

I've got a question for ya. My scooter runs super now, but, there is one little thing I notice that wasn't there before. Whenever I'm sitting at a red light etc, I can't help but to twist the throttle if for nothing else to hear it bark a little. Lots of times it will spit, sputter and act like it's going to quit. Then, it will go right back to running right again. Seems it does it worse whenever I quickly twist the throttle.

Do I make sense?

First idea comes in to play only if it's on a hot engine.  The first step (I've notcied) of the TM's heat management routine is to lower the idle RPM.  Can get low enough to lope a bit, make the start up accel lag a bit or even make the RPM low enough that the charging system warning kicks on.  If that's all it is it's no big deal.  Just ride it and don't worry.  Perhaps feather the clutch a bit more on takeoff to compensate for it.

Those 50cc two strokes have a tendency to do that

First idea comes in to play only if it's on a hot engine.  The first step (I've notcied) of the TM's heat management routine is to lower the idle RPM.  Can get low enough to lope a bit, make the start up accel lag a bit or even make the RPM low enough that the charging system warning kicks on.  If that's all it is it's no big deal.  Just ride it and don't worry.  Perhaps feather the clutch a bit more on takeoff to compensate for it.

I've never looked at it. If I had a laptop there..Can you show me anything about it? I'd have to borrow a laptop.

Common HogBreath, you had to expect it was coming given the title of this thread and the verbiage you used in your post. I mean even I who, usually resists the cheap and easy joke, could not help myself.

I knew it was coming. But you also know I was just BSing. I'm tougher than that, I used to be married to my Ex.

Excellent - just as I'd hoped 2L.  Hard to believe that the Tee Mat is really as easy as this - but it is!  :)

Now, if I could just get a reply from Zipper's sales..... as usual!  >:(   You might recall our HDI bikes have an active valve on the exhaust and inlet. The cable to the active inlet valve has exactly the same connector as the HD O2 plugs.  "Please Mr Zipper, can I buy another cap to blank this connector off?"   Silence...  >:(

Cheers,

Jim

After the fact support and/or advice may not be their best thing Jim.  I remember one question (in fact the only question) I'd asked of them after finally getting all my parts back.  It was asked (and re-asked) for about a month before finally receiving an answer.    The T-Max seems to be a good idea in a truly effective and functional package.  More than the package, however, is pretty much up to us.  At least that's the way it seems.

Yes, you summed it up nicely there, 2L.  A little bit disappointing that they (the sales side that is) don't seem to pay much heed to requests from existing customers though. How hard can it be to spend 30 seconds writing me an email to say, "yes, a blanking plug is $45.53, send us your CC details and address and we'll mail you one"?  Still, it doesn't affect the workings!  :orange:

Does sound like you've got most of the battle won.  Sorry for not having seen this thread earlier.  There's just so much cra..... stuff that gets posted here that seeing everything is not a possibility.  Scanning thread titles for new threads means a somewhat generic title can get skipped over.  My bad....

No, my bad 2L - should have chosen a less generic title!  :drink:

Anyway, you aren't ever guilty of not replying when you can - so no way were you on my list of non-responders!  ;)

Jim;
Just look into this thread as well, I saw your comment on the PM to me for oil and I am sorry but I must have missed it. I try to respond to all inquiries. I don't want you to feel that I've ignored your request so if i can still answer an oil question let me know.
