Title: Newbie needs advice
Post by: FXDSEwannabe on November 06, 2007, 01:17:54 PM
Hey,
I have been reading with interest this forum for the last couple of weeks.
I am trying to decide on whether to pull the trigger on a 2007 FXDSE Dyna. It is new at the dealer and looks really nice. I have gotten them to discount approx. 10% off of the MSRP. I am concerned about 2 things:
1. Is the 110 motor reliable? In other words are there only a few vocal people with problems?
2. Is this a chick bike? I am 6' 4" and 270. I see that some of the ladies seem to have this bike.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

First off welcome to the site.  10% off sounds good.  As for the problems I've had a few but would do it again.  Since the motor replacement things seem ok other than some lifter niose.

Welcome from Arkansas!

IMO, don't think any model HD is necessarily a "chick bike".

Welcome from Oklahoma  :cowboy:

Nope....not a chick bike.  If you are getting 10% off msrp on a new SE bike & you like the dyna, you better grab it quick.

Look for the positive...it might be a "Chick Magnet".  :o

Welcome from West Michigan!

Sounds like a great buy -- If you like the way it feels, go for it!

Welcome to the site.  I'd buy the FXDSE in a heart beat if I were to get a second Harley.  Personnaly I'm a dresser guy, as I found out when I bought my first "Geezer Glide".  I had a 1200 sporty that I was going to keep for life.  Sold it a year and half ago to get a newer dresser which I sold this year for my CVO dresser.  No regrets even with the 110 motor issues. I haven't had any yet but I'll take the chance as the CVO bikes are just a dream to drive.  I love my wife's Dyna Street Bob and can only imagine how much fun the SE Dyna would be.  And my wife rides a Dyna. And when mine's in for service and she's not using it I'm on it like white on rice.  IMHO the Dyna is much more fun then a softail.

Good Luck whatever you decide.

Welcome from Salem, Oregon. First, the FXDSE is a great looking bike! My concern for you would be "does the bike fit you well"? I have a Dyna Low Rider that I set up originally for my wife, meaning that I lowered it and left the mid controls in place in addition to lots of chrome goodies. I am 5'10 and feel somewhat cramped on this bike even with my feet on the highway pegs. I can't imagine that you would feel comfortable for too long riding a Dyna. The plus side - the Dyna bikes are really a blast to ride so if it is a fun ride you are looking for the FXDSE is sure to satisfy.

Thanks for all of your input.
great site, great people.
1 other thing: the "standard" warranty is 2 years for the CVO. Is it the same for all of the HD's? How much do the extended (5 year?) warranties cost?
Doug

24 months/unlimited mileage is the warranty for all H-D's. Extended warranty's are negotiable even though dealers will tell you they are not. You can shop around to different dealers (there are some listed on this site that give 20% off) and get a deal. You don't have to buy the extended warranty from the same dealer you buy the bike from, and it will be honored at all H-D dealers.

Fired00d- Thanks for the info.
SCRM-R Good point!
Guilty- 1 of the bikes that i rented during this quest for the perfect bike was a Dyna wide glide. I really liked the forward controls and this bike is similar. I think my height works for forward controls.
One of the other bikes that I like is the fat bob, again forward controls. I havent ridden one of those yet.
Rented a Fat boy and wasnt impressed.
Rented a Heritage- my second favorite. It didnt have highway pegs and wasnt very comfortable.
rented an Ultra Classic- Too much for cutting traffic.
I am leaning towards the edgy look realizing that i will be giving up comfort.

My buddy, Cheevers, is 6' 4" and bought a Dyna and the bike was too cramped for him.  He added foot peg extensions and all of the other obvious stuff to help him stretch out, but ultimately sold it for a different model.  Be sure you can live with the dimensions for long hours in the saddle...unless that isn't the goal.

Here is the post w/the dealers that will offer 20% discounts - Vendor, Mftr or Support Points of Contact (http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=3710.msg69302#msg69302). Give them a call and get some prices for extended warranty.

i agree. at 6'1, 215 lbs, and being on a dyna the last 2 years, i find it  a great handling hot rod. BUT---its good for about 2 hours before it starts killin your legs and back.

its perfect for ripping the rural roads, you can drag the pegs, pull wheelies, jumps hard in light to light races, but sux on any distance rides.

know a guy who rode from alabama to oregon and back on a fxdl and loved it, but he is small frame at around 5'5.

hoping this helps.

I have rented a few HD's trying to find the right one.
Out of 4 rented (fat boy, Dyna wide glide, Ultra Classic, Heritage Softail) I ALWAYS get a lower back ache after about 2 hours in the saddle. Right at the tail bone. My buddies tell me to get a Corbin seat. I was thinking it is just an age thing (44).
I didn't expect the problem with the UC but it was still there.

It could be the seat many have found the MoCo seats undesirable. Have any of the bikes you tried had a backrest for rider?

Fire- No, they look like they are in the right spot though. I just can't see a seat like that going on the FXDSE.
My buddies actually went up to Corbin and they made a custom seat in 1 day while they waited. They got their first thing in the morning, the Corbin people took measurements, based on their ars and leg length and asked lots of questions. They gave them a tour, then sent them away for the day and they picked up their bikes that evening with a new seat installed. They claim it solved all of their comfort problems.

Eagle- Your right that CVO fat boy looks nice!!!

Choose carefully, as you are a big man.  Seats can be replaced for a price, and Corbin is for most people a good choice.  If you purchase a custom or aftermarket seat like that, you can always have the seat built to your needs (like moving you back a bit to give more leg room).  A bad seat will make riding torturous instead of enjoyable.  Tailbone pain is the worst!!

It seems that most HD bikes are built for people who are "average" height in America, so variations one way or the other might require some mods to make the bike fit...I've had to do a lot of things to mine to make it fit me 'cause I'm short.

Congrats on the new bike , having owned (and loved ) the last CVO dyna I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt it ain't no chicks bike. In some respects you could venture to say it's more manly as it has none of the creature comforts the Ultra has and you have to contend with the elements out of shear testosterone. :huepfenlol2:

There is no such thing as a CHICK bike in SE's.  If you love it, buy it.  You can always personalize it to your size later. But you do have the heads up on the leg problem.

One get a bike because it calls to them.
and the 110 oh baby what a ride. :huepfenjump3:
