Changing Primary Chaincase Lubricant
« on: June 10, 2015, 09:15:26 AM »

When I went to the dealer and talked to them about fluid changes I asked them how much fluid they put in the primary and they said just 1 quart = 32 oz, I said the manual says 38 oz, they said they don’t know why it says that they always just put in 1 quart. Needless to say I did my own fluid changes and measured out 38 oz. what is everybody else putting in 38 oz or 1 quart in the primary?

Shop and owners manual are the way to go.  While some service departments may vary, the manuals are what I go to for information.  38oz if you are just draining/filling for a change and 45oz if you removed the primary for a complete drain.  However, even with those recommended fill amounts, watch where the level comes to.  You don't want the clutch sitting in fluid.  IMO, one quart in the primary ain't enough.... :)

When I pop the inspection cover, I note where the existing fluid is sitting and make a mark somewhere inside the cover noting the level.  When I drain and refill, I can note if I'm above that mark and by how much.  Just one of those things I like to tinker with..... ;D

I recently did my first service at home.  I had the bike down for the 30t front sprocket upgrade and at the same time decided to have it all set and ready for Sturgis.

Of course I had the primary off and cleaned so I did the 45oz with Redline V-Twin Primary Oil.  I also put Redline Shockproof in the trans.  Oh, Liqui-Moly in place of my Amsoil that I've ran since my first 1000 mile service.  So far all of the oils seem to be doing what others said they would do.

These oils are NOT CHEAP either, just a few bucks under $100.

I can't see how anyone can see into the derby cover hole to see the oil level.  On my old '76 Shovelhead, the opening is such that you can clearly see the bottom of the clutch basket and the oil level, but how do you see inside one of the newer bike?

Same thing at my dealer...I was watching them and they only put in a quart.

Maybe this is why the compensators don't get enough lube :nixweiss:

That is why I started this thread, I was thinking the same thing. I wonder how many dealers are putting in just one quart.

The best way to make sure you have the correct amount of lubricant is to check with the bike sitting level and viewing the oil level through the derby cover opening.  Use a small flashlight to make it easier to see, and you want the fluid to just touch the bottom of the clutch.

Dealerships do a lot of stuff just because that's the way they've done it for umpteen years.  On the old bikes they used a quart, and since the change to the trans and primary in 2007 some of them still use the old specs.  I don't know if it's due to ignorance or what.

HMMM I measured it out to 38oz. I also put a mark in side before I drained it, you can see a little scratch on the left side just above the oil line.

You know I never even looked at my level before I drained it. But I measured 38oz and it was just touching the clutch pads. Maybe I'm wrong then since I didn't check and under filled it. I had to use flashlight and peek in to see level of fluid.

When I took the picture the oil was HOT! I wonder if it looks like that because it is expanded? Doesn’t oil expand when it is hot? I drained the oil then I measured out 38oz and poured it in. I did not pay attention to the level when I was done. I will have to see what it looks like cold.

Well let us know how the level is when you add the 38oz back in. Really curious to see the difference.
