Thanks for the write up and pictures! This is now on the list for me. Where do you procure the Screamin Eagle spoon, the wife's pantry?  :)

That's a question for Russ! :) I know you would need your CVO VIN number for HD to sell it to you, though!

You're gonna be amazed what adding the letters S. E. do to the price of a wooded spoon...        ::)

I keep waiting to hear about the big.......Oooooooooops,  We didn't think to cut and remove the zip tie that compressed the tensioner so it would fit in there. :nervous:

Good instructional video. I also noticed he left out cutting and removing the zip tie. I used one on each side after clamping it down and so the Hayden unit slipped in as easy as the stock one came out. So no SE spoon needed for me. But good job. :2vrolijk_21:

No ooops for us thanks to Russ who stopped me as I was about to tighten the fasteners to cut and remove the zip tie. Updated the instructions to point that out.

Great suggestion. Actually I would say it is better to clamp and zip tie the tensioner before anything else as it isn't easy to pull on the zip tie with oily/slippery fingers! But based on Russ not having to use any zip ties when he replaced the tensioner on his own bike (with the aforementioned S/E wooden spoon) we thought the spoon was all that was needed to accomplish this task.

I will add the zip tie step as a suggestion before starting the messy part of this project.

Well that was quick....

Decided to dump the fluid and look at the Hayden after 400 miles.  I wasn't happy with the noises I was hearing or the feel I had yesterday riding two-up, so I figured a look was in order.  Wish I'd taken pictures (but I didn't).  More funk on the magnet than I care for, and the wear on the Hayden was as much as 16,000 miles on the stocker.  Top of the chain was tight, no more than 3/8" between the bottom of the shoe and the Hayden's mount.  I didn't like what I was seeing, so the stocker went back in.  Quick ride before the thunderstorms came in, and the primary noise is gone.

I'll be calling Hayden tomorrow.

Yeah, I'm not real pleased.  There's a thread on HTT and HDF about this, and several people have modified the shoe and/or the springs, or they're running one spring.  I'm not doing that.

Not really how I wanted to spend this evening.

So what kind of noises should I be paying listening for?  :nervous:

Mine was whirring quite loudly....almost a "clicking".....that would vanish when I pulled the clutch lever.  The feel got progressively worse on Sunday.  I think I mentioned that I was planning on dumping the fluid this week anyway, so I figured I'd pull the outer primary while I was at it.  I had half the play in the chain that I had with the stock tensioner, and I didn't care for the grooves that had grown in the face of the shoe.

Yours didn't feel nearly as tight as mine, and I heard no noise when I rode it.

There aren't many complaints about the Hayden out there, but they are out there.  Similar problems as I had; primary noise, too-tight chain, spring breakage.  We'll see what Hayden says.

We're assuming you used (zero) of the available shims. :nixweiss:

No shims on mine or Russ's bike. His is an 05 night train and mine is a 13 CVO BO.

No shims, but the Hayden wasn't in the Night Train (that's got a manual adjuster), it was in the FLHTCUSE7.

I don't think I'd have been able to jam the thing in there with either of the shims in place.
