Does CVO really need any more than exhaust upgrade
« on: October 26, 2010, 09:50:00 AM »

I'm a pretty serious touring rider. 15K miles a year. I've been thinking about cams and heads but is all that really needed. I have a 103 now with cams and heads and don't want to go backwards on power. But my new CVO (It's on the way) has the 110 and  frankly, the price of the bike is already getting to me. Opinions.

Only those who have done these mods can accurately answer this and IMO the answer is yes  :2vrolijk_21:

If your goals are similar to mine which are wanting the engine to run optimally on pump fuel without compromising reliability

To wake up the 110 it needs to breathe after all its just an air compressor.

Depending on the model you may need a High Flow breather. The CVO SESG's come with the Ventilator and it is sufficient as is.

Then you need an exhaust system that allows for more outflow.

A tuning device of some fashion to reprogram the Fuel and ignition to optimum performance settings and then a Cam to allow the engine to breathe properly.

With these mods you can reasonably expect to be over 100 HP and over 115 lbs torque

What you do not "Need" is High compression pistons and jugs or head work or a throttle Body all of these have a place if you are after max horsepower. They tend to effect reliability and fuel requirements as well.

There is very little discussed on this site that has anything to do with "need."    8)   Various upgrades to the 110 can be found all over the site.   :beatdeadhorse:   The question thus becomes, "What do you want?"  You'll find it here.

God bless us all.   :2vrolijk_21:   :2vrolijk_21:    :dankk2:

My '10 SESG has only the 2.0" fullsac baffles, the cat removed, and a dyno tune (as noted by others, it comes with a high-flow air cleaner). Using a PRO SERT, I got 89hp and over 100 ft lbs of torque from 2800 rpm up. That's plenty for me, given the cost of throttle bodies, cams, etc.

I ride at mile high altitude and up, and find that's plenty for me...

"Need", no, not really. But there are nice gains to be had if (unlike me) you're willing to spend the bucks. The old racer's saying is "how fast can you afford to go?"

Pipes, and race tuner will allow the bike to perform a little better and run much cooler at a reasonable price. Right out of the box the CVO is a little restricted thanks to the EPA. IMHO.

It's a great question. I've done the exhaust and the tuner. Thinking about cams, pistons, heads for a winter project. Agree that reliability is key. Would like to near from those that have done more.
At our GTG's, I've met a lot of owners who've done some serious work and been told it can be done.

Agree that the exhaust upgrade with a fuel management system is a must.  I'm also looking at having different cams installed over the winter and looking for suggestions there.  As far as head and piston work, not sure how much that really would accomplish over and above the other work if it was done right?

I highly recommend the Fueling 574 cams the bike actually runs smoother the way it should have been without bureaucratic interference  :nixweiss:

More power and responsive through the band from 2800 rpm to redline. Perfect cams for your bike! Add lifters and adj pushrods no need to touch the heads. I was always told if it ain't broke don't fix it?

The stock cams just ain't right it will feel like a different bike!

For me the only upgrades I felt necessary were pegs and drivers backreat.

Steve at Fullsac highly recommends the Andrews 54 cams as perfect for the SESG 110 motor. Also a .020 cometic head gasket set for slightly more compression. Anybody done this and if so what difference did you notice. This question assumes you also have pipes and tuner which I think we all agree is necessary.

my 07' SG had the 103" with heads and SE cams.  it was ok but felt sluggish to me.

so i put 500 miles on the 11' CVO and it felt slightly better only because of the increased torque.  so i took it to the dealer and put V&H True Dual headers, Hi Output slip ons, Super Tuner, had them re-work the heads, TR-590 cams (chain) and hi compression slugs in her.  then i had it custom mapped on the dyno.

i was hoping for more hp than i got but i got much more torque than i was looking for.  i knew the exhaust was the wildcard because as we all know, 2 into 1's net the hp.  after 600 more miles (most of which was touring the rustic WI roads), i am very pleased.  the torque coming outta the corners is so much nicer than having the hp at higher rpm's.  it's got plenty when i smack it but i do wish it had more.  i love the Hi Output tone too much to modify the exhaust and can't stand the looks of a 2 into 1 on baggers.  a bigger cam would be too harsh on the valve train and would take away from the torque and rideability.

what i got was 106hp and 120tq.  it's SUPER ridable and much more crisp for such a heavy bike.  It also runs much cooler, i don't use the rear cylinder shutdown at all but feel NO heat like i did when it was stock.

so in my humble opinion......spend the couple grand to make her breath better and open her up a bit.

I agree, after following this thread http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=44545.0 , pretty hard to beat the payoff for what little needs to be done IMHO, it's the route I'm going to go this winter.  :2vrolijk_21:  Well....unless I find an extra 7k laying around and get a wild hair for a 120R
