2007 Softail std. Buddy has $3500 burning a hole in his pocket and wants Horsepower for his dough. What suggestions do you have and where is a good place to have it done. TIA.  Later,Q

here's what I'd do:
street ported heads with 1.9 intake valves
bore the stock cylinders to 3.875"
cast flattop 103 pistons
.030" head gaskets
10.5 compression
long cam like se257, wood tw8, andrews 55
power commander or race tuner, which ever is preferred by the man who will tune it
open air cleaner
2 into 1 exhaust like fatcat, supertrapp, pro pipe hs, roadrage, all work well, some louder than others
Horsepower Inc throttle body if you want peak horsepower above 5500rpm

lots of good builders on the east coast...Hillside Cycle in Upstate NY... R&R Cycle in Manchester, NH...Black Hills Custom Parts in Rockaway, NJ...Big Boyz Cycle in Maine

You just described the motor in LD sans the 2 into 1  and while that's a strong motor, had I known H-D would nix my warranty even though I used their parts and used one of their dealers, I would have gone with Mackie. Been there, done that and nobody does better than Mackie - -  nobody.

I agree with spiderman, mackie is top shelf, his mega-sphere head and piston setup works well...and is kinda expensive

If you are on the east coast and want to stay on the east coast run the bike down to Clear Water Florida and have Wes Brown (Cycle Rama) do it or John Sachs in Ft. Lauderdale, Want to stay in the Carolina's have T-Man do it, want to be in the Northeast have R&R do your work or Hillside in NY.    I would recommend the guy that does the headwork and cam also do the build one guy to stand behind it all vs. he said she said etc etc.

Wes has done my 2 of our 3 bikes, one middle of the road the 110" runs great and the other one pretty wild the roadking.   I believe otophile, Howie, Scott and others.   He also just won the Nationals for the Teresi dyno drags with a softail B motor that put out over 180 hp. and 170+ torque.

If you leave the East Coast some suggestions would be Mackie California, Mike Stegman Oregon, or Dan Basiley in Portland Oregon.

I think any one of these 6 will deliver what they tell you they will do and will stand behind what they do.

What class Brian?

You talking Top Fuel, Pro Fuel, Pro Gas or what?

Are these same seven running a 95", 103", 96" or 110" motors that have a need for bottom end torque?

Or are these drag racers that hold them wide open till they cross the finish line?

That's like saying that the Nascar cars are running XX heads so that means that the street legal Monte Carlo's and Fusions will benefit the common man if they use those heads made by XX.

You gotta do better Brian, I agree Mackie is good but disagree that no one is better!

WELL I hate to climb in this but if you are going to drive it on the street and want to go fast and make it last there would be only on place to go CYCLE-RAMA!!!!!!!!

I have a 95 inch motor with Wes Brown heads and it spun a modest 131 on the treadmill. He builds these all day everyday and they last. He has won the AMA horsepower shoot out in Daytona more times than I can count.

Oh and my 95 is a carb model, FI numbers would be lower.

michael,
that htcc build requires some blueprinting...I'd guess 90hp/95tq if it is just bolted together and 105hp/110tq if it's done correctly

Dawg,
I don't want to start a pissing contest, so understand that I expressing my opinion here and not dissin you or your bike or your motor. Ok, lets' get that straight from the start. I know you have some strong motors and I know you run them hard and they hold up. BUT, it's my understanding that you don't shy away from spending serious cash to get what you want. JQ's buddy is trying to do what he can on a $3,500 budget. The next thing is the HP Dyno Shootout. I've talked to Carl Morrow (Carl's Speed Shop ) holder of a bunch of world records, I've talked to Bob Moreland out here who holds a couple records at Bonneville and obviously I'm a big Dave Mackie fan. They have all told me that they could build a 96" - 113 " motor that produce over 200hp that wouldn't get out of it's on way on the street. They all say high lift, long duration cams with a lot of overlap would produce a motor that produces HP on a slow steady curve all the way up to 7k or more, but it wouldn't have a lot of torque and would take 7 seconds or more to get to peak HP. Just wanted to state that because I don't put any stock in who wins Dyno Shootouts. Then again, one could build a motor with stump pulling TQ and not a lot of HP. A good street motor is one that combines both in a rideable, useable and durable method. It sounds like you have just such a motor, but my question is did you get it all for the stated $3,500 at the head of this post ? If you did then by all means, JQ's buddy should beat a path to Wes Brown's door.

Bottom line is there are several good builders out there and a lot of B.S. artist. The key is to find the good and ignore the rest. Below is a Cycle-Rama build on a 95" motor, probably not the most top end you'll ever see, but look a the torque. I've posted this before, it's just a basic reliable build.

That's a good looking sheet Talon. I like the way the TQ jumps right up off the line and the HP is a nice steady curve. So it begs the question. What are the components and how much $$

Brian,

On Michelle's 103 not a 96, I bought htcc heads, flat top pistons, yb13 cam and had al redman remove the ramps from the head that are used for that funky piston and had him clean up the heads just a little.   Cost for the headwork was about 500 dollars.  the dyno sheet was 117/115.   You can not compare the 96 to the 95 as a one for one because of the crank differences.  Personally rahter have a 95 over a 96 anyday but that is just me.   In your buddies case the only difference here would be he could buy the juggs or have his bored out and have X guy do the headwork or start from his stock ones recommended remember i had the sucky SE 103 hemis so I bought new ones, but your buddy could spend those same dollars for X named guy to do work on his stock heads and match the cam accordingly.

Heads         1150.00
Pistons         279.00
Headwork      600.00
Cam/gears     750.00
Labor           500.00
Gaskets        100.00
Adjustables    169.00
Dynotune      200.00
comp release  100.00

Roughly 3500.00 dollars for the build less a 20% discount on the heads /pistons/ gaskets/ adjustables

If all my HTCC build yields is 90/95, the bike will sit at the shop until it gets to triple digits.

My 95" HTCC Build with 211s made 96HP/102TQ - Dyna
My 95" HTCC CNC Build with 251s made 98HP/99TQ - Softail
My FLHRSEI2 made 95HP/105TQ, Tuner Air Cleaner & Pipes
My STOCK FLHTCSE2 made 97HP/98TQ, Tuner, Air Cleaner, Pipes

So if my 103" HTCC build only makes 90/95 I will be pi$$ed to say the least.

My STOCK FLHTCSE2 made 97HP/98TQ, Tuner, Air Cleaner, Pipes

So if my 103" HTCC build only makes 90/95 I will be pi$$ed to say the least.

Nancy's 95" Lowrider had 211's originally, was at 105/107T.
Her 95" Lowrider now with the Tman heads and cams is 126/121T.
Heads is the key!
Actually it's the combo that rules.
A bunch of good parts mean nothing if the combo isn't good!

Spiderman he can build a good street motor for the $3500.00. I have that in my 95 but I did all of the tear down and reassemble myself. The trick is in the heads. Wes builds a good street motor with some killer combos. It is not about the horsepower shootout it is about the street. He just happens to be good at both.

FATBOY I am a Zippers man. That does not mean I am wearing blinders. Zippers builds some great motors but so does Wes.

michael,
sorry if I hit a nerve with the 90/95...I see that you have some experience with htcc, and I'm sure that if the quench is set to around.035" all the way around the angled quench area, you'll have a good build...still think the valves and ports are too big on the htcc cnc heads and often result in poor low rpm torque...for my money bathtub heads are cheaper, easier and better

Naaaa, no nerves hit....Nerves must be checked at the door when entering forums.

The inability to read emotion on a computer screen requires that.

I was just commenting, if I do not yield 3-digits, they can keep it until it does.

Have a good week.

That's a good looking sheet Talon. I like the way the TQ jumps right up off the line and the HP is a nice steady curve. So it begs the question. What are the components and how much $$

B B

Sorry, I should have elaborated, this isn't my motor, this was a build they did and an article on it was witten on nightrider's web page, sorry. But this is what I'm going to have done to my RK. I was planning on getting it done this winter, but several unexpected expenses and my daughters wedding caused me to put this on hold!! :(

http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/street_tc_engine.htm

Peak numbers don't tell the whole story, if you doing average riding you want torque and you want it to come on as soon as possible. This is a good reliable build, that's what I'm looking for.
