Mikey's build of his 2000 FXR4
« on: December 11, 2008, 05:53:58 PM »

This is the thread where I'm going to take you though my trials and tribulations of doing the build on my bike.

The build will be:

•   SE Heads
•   Cometic .030 head gaskets
•   Bob Wood W6 cam
•   Rivera taper-lite chromolly adjustable push rods
•   Sifton max axle lifters
•   Chrome lifter blocks -  whoo hooo…….. chrome doo dads  
•   Mikuni HSR42 carb
•   Compu-Fire Single Fire Ignition (installed in June)
•   Pro-Force One AC and breather kit
•   Change INA cam bearing to Torrington
•   S&S reed style breather valve

Two things that I'm working on right now are

1) the required parts list

2) the order of sequecne in which to proceed

I'm taking the next couple of 'post slots' here so that I can have just a bit of continuity in the first three post in this thread.

The sequential order of progression for the build  ....

I anticipate that it will require a few iterations .... after yall have a chance to look at it and critique it :D

This is the 'TEAR DOWN' steps .....
This is only a list of steps that I plan to follow ... I"m not trying to re-write the SM.  When I feel that I have all of the 'steps' identified, and listed in the order to be executed,
THEN I'll go back and put in some detail. Again, I do not intend to re-write/re-type the SM, which will be on my work bench.
But I do want to put in some 'TIPS' ... and pointers, like how to remove the rear bolt on the rear cylinder rocker box.

I also intend to built a set of 'steps' for the installation of the new parts.  With 'tips' listed, like checking that the cylinders are 'CLEAN' before you put them back in. You don't want to install
them if they still have compound residue in them from honing .......  right?  RIGHT !  I did not see any steps for 'cleaning' them in the SM     :nixweiss:

Sequential Steps To Execute – (Everything is ‘REMOVE’)
      1.   Seat
      2.   Battery
      3.   Drain fluids
          a.   Gas tank
          b.   engine, primary and tranny
      4.   Console and tank
      5.   Exhaust system
      6.   Air cleaner and carb
      7.   Spark plugs
      8.   Rocker boxes – SM pg 3-18
      9.   Rocker arms and push rods – SM pg 3-19
     10.   Heads - SM pg 3-21
     11.   Cylinders – SM pg 3-35
     12.   Pistons – SM pg 3-35
     13.   Lifters and lifter blocks – SM pg 3-49
     14.   Cam – SM pg 3-52
     15.   Inner cam bearing – SM pg 3-56

what am I missing ?

Thanks for taking some time to look this over and providing any input !
Mikey

fxr4mikey~~~

I think you would need a college education to get the full use of those tools.... :2vrolijk_21:
 :bananarock:

Let's just say this wouldn't be on my Christmas List!!!!

As for a Inner Cam Puller/Installer" I will send you to a "Thread" here that provides 3 options as to what I would do for such a tool:

INNER CAM BEARING PULLER/INSTALLER COMBO TOOL  <~~~~CLICK, VIEW, & READ

Of course your 4th option is to borrow mine.....however I can help.....we can work out the details privately.  By the way I am "ClassicRider2002" over at HTT.

                 ROCKER BOX GASKETS~FXR* <~~~~~~CLICK, VIEW, & READ
*There are a total of 43 posts "REPLYS" into this THREAD, and basically starting at "REPLY" #23 begins
where you will find the most interest. "REPLYS" #23 - 31 are the most informative for any evo engine.
Some of the information within this "THREAD" will relate to working within the "frame" of the FXR
butttttttttt "REPLYS" #23 - 31 will be "UNIVERSAL" to the application of any EVO ENGINE.  This "THREAD"
also shows photos of the actual gaskets and part numbers that I have used on my EVO engine [my 99 FXR2]
                 which have been successful.

Simply providing the above "THREAD" as reference for anyone that is interested in why the gaskets fxr4mikey is installing have been chosen......based upon other's experiences.......

I'd like to say THANKS to Tim for all of his efforts in the past ..... the rocker box bolt thread is FANTASTIC !!!!

 :2vrolijk_21:

...........and I would like to also give Mike (REDFXR2) a  :2vrolijk_21: for beginning the "THREAD" to begin with....it provided a plateform to address these issues and we all benefit.

Regards,

Tim

JohnS_ QUESTIONS ABOUT SE EVO PERFORMANCE HEADS ON A FXR2   <~~~~CLICK, VIEW, & READ

fxr4mikey~~~~

When it comes to the "Sreamin Eagle Heads" the thread above addresses some reflections about them....there is one post in particular that addresses that the "OEM valve seals" in the screamin eagle heads failed and what the person did about it.  My buddy also installed screamin eagle heads out of the box into his evo 1997 Road King a few years back with the same experience as well.....I know that Mike (REDFXR2) has installed them on his and hasn't mentioned any problems but I am not sure if he made any alterations.....we here on tech boards live in a "small" world if one person has an issue then we naturally begin to assume that every bike or part is going to have the same issue, but that is statistically impossible.....so all I am doing here is "highlighting" a couple of other's experiences that I am aware of in hopes that you or anyone reading this "THREAD" will give consideration to an alternative and perhaps not look back and wish you had known.....I know my buddy would never install "Screamin Eagle Heads" without modifying the valve seals before putting them into his bike in the future....just like any of us would if we had a similar experience relating to anything with our bikes.....but 2 people's experiences does not make future experiences a reality merely a possiblity......if I were going to do the build you are doing.....I would consider making these alterations......

I happen to be "ClassicRider2002" at HTT (Harley Tech Talk)

Regards,

Tim

FXR4MIKEY,
I put SE heads on my '97 road king, which I bought new from a dealer, and within 10,000 miles had a valve seal leak.  I don't know if it was from the heads sitting around for years or just poor seals in the beginning.  I do know that I would put new valve seals on those heads before installing them.  I would search for the best seals made, I think there were some made by viton or something like that.  ZN14

fxr4mikey~~
Paul - You mention that you did this on your '97 RK what year did you do this ?  Just wondering how old the heads might have been when you bought them .......Thanks for the input !!

Re: "FXR CHATTER" « Reply #72 on: November 13, 2008, 05:08:24 PM »

I bought the heads off ebay from a dealer for a good price.  It was around 2003 or 2004.  But I have no way of knowing how long those heads sat on his shelf before I got them.  All I know is it would be real cheap to do it now before installing them.  ZN14
