High Speed Wobble?
« on: July 03, 2010, 03:13:00 PM »

I've managed to carefully break in the spiced rum and took her out last night for a spirited ride.  It's been a while since I topped 100mph on  a HD (if ever before) and there's a noticeable wobble at around 95-100.  I expect this is due to the batwing and the 850lb weight.

Now, I'm not going to ride like this all the time, but I do want to run with the big boys from time to time.

Is this how it is and do I just live with it?  Is there something I can do?  Or is this wrong?

Cheers

I ride an 09 CVO ultra and easily go above 100 with no issues for many miles.

I don't think it's the batwing or weight.

Thanks diamondback - what do you want me to show - a pic of my wobble?   :carrot:

Or do you want a pic of my spiced rum?

You ask and I will deliver.

The bike at wobble.  Just kidding.

Tires is a possibility.  But they would have to be very low.

Ditto. Check your tire pressure and see if any of the wheels are missing weight(s). This is the first I've heard of the newer frame having a wobble. :nixweiss:

Tire Pressure
Tire & Wheel Balance
Steering Head Bearing Adjustment (fall away) and bearing lubrication

If this only happened the one time so far, it could have been just a reaction from the batwing to a particular wind direction or turbulence.  The unfortunate truth is that a fork mounted windshield or fairing is not the most stable design in the world.  That's probably why racing bikes have frame mounted fairings.

I wouldn't recommend assuming this is just how it is, however.  Most people with the new frame design bikes ('09-'10) aren't reporting the same sort of high speed wobbles that were so common on the earlier bikes.  Have your dealer check it out, especially the steering head adjustment and lubrication and the wheel balance.

When I first got my bike I thought there was a wobble at high speeds, now I know its just that it is more agile.

Thanks for the feedback.  Tyre pressure is good.  I went out again this am and rode her hard (please the opportunity is not calling you) and it's certainly a wobble and it's a little scary.  It's into the dealer this weekend so hopefully they can find the issue and fix it back to tight at speed.

Cheers

there should'nt be any wobble. I take my FLHT 09 frequently over 110 mph (there is no speed limit on German Autobahn) and never noticed the wobble I was used to with the earlier frames.

Over 100+ several times 2010 FLHXSE No wobble actually the tightest tracking Harley I have riddden to date?

Something is amiss everyone has already contributed the possible items I would suggest? A thorough checkout at the dealer is in order?

Don had a similar issue with his 09 SERG.  A couple of weeks ago we finally made it in to a dealership.  Explained the situation to the service writer and asked that they get it off the ground and do a "fall away" check on it and shoot some grease in the next bearing (obviously dry, since none showed at all at the bottom).

They did the fall away check and it was 6 1/2 turns (should only be a maximum of 3 turns).  Also, the tire had slight cupping and wear on the right side more than the left side.  Tightened the neck bearings, new tire and the poblem is gone. :2vrolijk_21:

Go get a fall away check done.

Thanks JCZ - this is the lingo that I need when I speak with the dealer.

Cannot tell you how scary this bike is to ride 95mph+ - reminds me of the time I introduced the idea of twin loving with me soon to be ex-wife's sister.  Cannot for the life of me forget that night and NO it did not go well.

I guess it's something simple or no one here would should praise for the chassis.

Will report back next week.

Cheers

fall away check with touring models? I believed those stem problems to be proprietary to v-rods and dynas ..

My SR is smoother at 100 than at 65.  That thing is awesome at that speed.
