Knock from primary
« on: June 23, 2015, 08:24:36 AM »

Hi all
Just wondering if this is normal, stopped at the traffic lights at idle with the clutch in, there is a knock from the clutch /primary area seems less noisy with clutch out. My 88 is silent ? is the 110 a noisy bitch ? the bike has done 25km just picked it up what do you guys think ?  :nixweiss:

Sounds like the same as my SE3 SG, the well known Neutral Rattle.
Here is a thread that will give you a better understanding on the subject.

First thing I did was dump the SY3 "20W50 Engine Oil" from the transmission and replaced it with a gear oil.
I personally use Spectro platinium 6 Speed Transmission oil, made finding neutral a breeze and quieter gear change. Without going into the oil debate on shear etc do a search on oils and enjoy the many opinions on what is the best and worse.
However going to a non HD brand oil may void your warranty, other option would be to use Formula+

Yes.

My 2014 103 was a noisy b1tch. Knocked and clanked at the primary. Compensator noise I was told.
Dealer replaced it but didn't really help.
Then they put a .030 shim on it and that helped a lot but I was told that if the compensator is too tight, it may hurt the starter. I'm no mechanic though so I can't say if that is true.

My 2015 110 was noisy but not as bad as the 103. However, if my wife asks, "Is it supposed to make that noise?" then I can only assume it too is noisy.
I just had fullsac headers and a dyno tune done. Now the primary is much, much quieter. I'm happy with the change. Lots more torque, and even power throughout the rpm range. BTW, I left the stock mufflers on it. Don't like a loud bike. Maybe an age thing.
The headers and tune helped eliminate nearly all primary noise. The engine runs more consistent. Not smooth .... it's a Harley, but consistent. Before this the engine seemed to miss and sputter.

Had that noise on my '14 Ultra Limited. Turned out to be the auto adjuster for the primary chain. Lots of info on the site if you want to go to another type.
