That sounds a little expensive. [smiley=nixweiss.gif] How much does your dealer charge for the 1k, 5k, 10k, 15k, 20k service/s? Do you have any experience w/this dealers service department? Do you feel comfortable in committing to them doing the service(s) up to your 20k service? How long is the extended warranty (how many years)? Are you going to be in the area long enough to accumulate that many miles so that dealer can do the services?

This is the first time I've heard of services being included w/the extended warranty. More then likely it's going to benefit the dealer more then it's going to benefit the customer.

Gary..some of the dealers, I've heard, are offering "packages" for service like this.  If you consider that the 1K service is generally more than 200 bucks for what they're SUPPOSED to do, and more for the 10K and 20K, it's not a bad deal. I think my dealer charged me around 250 for the 1K, and about 150 for the 5K (which they screwed up).  Like you said, the 64K question is comfort level with the dealer's service.

The 7 year warranty can cost anywhere between 1K and 1500, depending on where you get it, then the tire and wheel is an additional 3 bills or so.

So, if you add it all up, it's not bad.  But all of your points are definitely things to put in the equation.

I generally don't buy extended warranties on anything. I'd rather pocket the money and take my chances.  Have been very lucky over the years, but I also take care of my stuff and treat it right.  For someone like flyingwillie who looks like only puts on a couple of thousand miles a year, the extended policy really looks like a waste. Given that most HD's are technically voiding the warranty with mods, it makes me more apt to just skip it.

On another note, I was at a Honda shop the other day looking at dirt bikes for my son. They had an 07 goldwing in the new metallic black. Had a lot of dealer installed options, chrome and lights, etc.  Stickered at 30K. The sales guy came over and said he would make a deal. You think?   ;)  Anyway, I asked what the factory warranty was on the 07's.  Three years, unlimited mileage.  Available also was four additional years for $660.  On a Goldwing, I would probably do that. Especially knowing that you wouldn't have to do any engine mods. Before I left, I asked if I bought the GW, would he throw in the dirt bike?  Approx 2K value.  He said maybe.  ;D

Agree with your questions d00d, but more and more dealers, especially auto dealers, are offering prepaid service packages, and although they require a larger up-front payment, they are generally a bargain compared to the individual charges for the services.  My dealership charged me 3 bills for the 1K service, and the 5K will be about the same with the 10k coming in probably just under 5 bills...so if I could have gotten a prepaid package, I probably would have jumped on it too.  I'm not going anywhere soon and am planning on having all my service done by the selling dealership, because they will honor my extended warranty with the mods I had them put on.   Each to his own I guess.  I got the extended mainly for piece of mind if anything...

I am familiar w/the service packages added onto the sale of a scooter (first service included), but this is the first I've heard of them added to extended warranty. I also don't disagree that there may be some initial savings, but it would be hard for me to swallow that someway/how the dealer hasn't figured out that he's going to make some money on this package. I'm thinking statistically that owners either move out the area before the get all the services, sell/trade the bike, or find another dealer/indy to do the service. It's just hard for me to swallow that the dealer is going to be giving something away. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Even when they have sales and mark stuff down to 75% off they still making a profit. [smiley=oops.gif]

You'll get no arguement out of me on anything you said.  The dealer could probably knock 50% off the extended warranty and still make a profit.  The dealers charge around $75/hour for labor, but how much to they pay their techs?  $25/hour maybe?  The rest is all pure profit, plus the profit for any parts they use and charge you for.  Even if they are giving you a break in cost of services over individual costs, they're still making a sizeable profit.  They wouldn't be in business very long if they didn't make a profit.  I've never heard of services being included in an extended warranty, but usually, those dealerships that do offer service packages, the person that offers you the extended warranty, offers you the pre-paid service package at the same time.   So they may not have actually been part of the extended warranty...just my thoughts on that one.

RD...you're right on that one...it's not really a part of the warranty, just an extra package they offer up front to "save you some money", and it really does save you several hundred dollars over the 20K if you use it.  If you really ride the bike, and not just park it, it is a savings to you.  But, the things they bank on are people not really riding the bike 20K before they sell or trade, and/or moving away. So, on average, they come out ahead, and get mo' money up front. When you go anywhere where there are a lot of bikes around and talk to people, there are a lot of folks who just don't really put many miles on a bike, for whatever reason.  They had an 03 SERK at my local dealer for a couple of months they took on trade that only had 9600 miles on it!!  I've got more than that on an 8 month old bike!  Folks just scoot around on them on Saturday or Sunday, and just don't do the extended rides like many of us do.  To each his/her own, but I love riding so much, mines going to be worn out before my extended warranty runs out...one reason I got it [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I look at it this way, I bought the bike to ride it, not keep it in the garage.  I had over 30K on my 02 when I traded it.  The dealer tried to tell me that was "high" mileage for an 02?  I said high?  I guess it would be if I had bought it just to sit in the garage...but it's a touring rig, I tour with it.  I know how much mileage I put on my machines, so I would have really of liked to have had a pre-paid maintenance package.  The dealer still makes a huge profit, but we feel better cuz we may save a couple hundred bucks, (more for chrome), out of it.

I generally add in the service intervals to 5k as part of the purchase price along with the ESP and on average $2,500 for OCD items. Beyond that I put $10k on average down and then am free to enjoy the new bike for awhile without spending any more money on it. My recollection of the deal on LD was that the ESP was right around $1,900. That would make the deal mentioned at the head of this thread a good value IMHO. Course my plan went out the window when I racked up 7,500 miles on LD in the first 6 weeks I owned it.  ;)

Personally I have never purchased an extended warranty on my scooters. Wished I had on a couple though and will get one with these new 110s and 6 speeds. I have chosen to wait unti my 22 month of ownership and purchase at that time. My dealer has promised to do it for me at cost and made the suggestion. He thought approximately $1100 for the 7 years. I'm sure they are still profiting from MOCO. So far they have been good as gold in their word. Heck I'm even ordering a matched fairing to have for resale or when it gets all chipped up on the kind of roads I'm on. That was at cost also from their suggestion. +/- 45% off includeing shipping. I really suggest you shop around thoroughly. So far I have had better luck with the small dealers, older buildings, etc..... They do not have the overhead costs as the other guys.
