Warranty advice
« on: January 16, 2007, 06:44:09 PM »

My warranty on my 05 seeg expires in March and I am thinking about buying the extended one but have not yet gotten a quote.  My local dealer says I need to speak with their finance manager who sells the warranties.  I am not sure how long I will keep this bike but I assume the warranty would be transferable and may help sell the bike when the time comes.  Any advice from those who have and have not opted to do this?  I have no idea on term and cost yet. thanks

Hey FW, I would ask some other questions. How much do you use the bike? How much is it modified? If modified, do you have any issues using the warranty now? How much does the extended warranty cost? How much have you used the 2 Year Warranty? Answering these questions should help you figure it out.  I think. ;) Hoist! 8-)

FW..yes, the warranty is transferable, and refundable, prorated, of course.  Any dealer in the country and sell you an extended warranty, so if you are so inclined, shop around with a couple of the 20% off dealers and see what kind of deal you can get.  It will cost you slightly more than it would have when the bike was brand new, but is still obtainable.  I have 7 years, plus the tire and wheel....the tire and wheel paid for itself with one nail in the rear tire...new tire, out of town, not a penny out of pocket.

Terry, thanks.  I rarely keep a bike more than 3 years but there may be value in doing it on this bike. I was not aware of the wheel and tire coverage....worth considering.  I was wondering if warranty prices were different from dealer to dealer so I will shop around as you suggest.
Thanks again.

Try dealing with them and shop two dealers I think they have room to play.

Terry, I've had the Extended Service Plan before, but this is the first time I've had it AND the tire and wheel coverage.  When I used the ESP before, the repair was quite hefty on the ESP, but cost me approximately $50 plus tax.......less than $55.  Anyway, does that "service charge" not apply to the tire and wheel coverage...................and yes I'm too lazy to get off my ass and go look at my paperwork   ;D.

Willie,

My warranty ('05 SEEG) expires in March also, and I received a mailing from the MoCo last month offering to sell me coverage direct.  This will give you a good idea of full price; as Terry noted you can probably do much better at one of the 20% off dealers.  These prices do not include optional tire & wheel damage (road hazard coverage).

7 year - $1644            *5 year extension to 2 year warranty equals a 7 year plan in MoCo-speak.
6 year - $1354
5 year - $1149
4 year - $  964

BTW - I love the accuracy of their information.  Bike was purchased 3/29/05, but the mailing indicates my factory warranty expires 2/28/07.  Must be that damned "new math". [smiley=confused5.gif]

They have a toll free number, 1-866-245-0993, and you'll need your VIN, current mileage, and purchase price of the bike.

Jerry, thanks....I have not gotten a notice or offer from MOCO yet.  I am the 2nd owner but did have the original warranty transferred to me.  I bought the bike with 2100 miles and it now has just under 5,000.  Your info is VERY helpful  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Henry,  apparently, the tire/wheel thing is different.  I haven't really read the thing either, but when I picked up the strange piece of metal in the rear tire in MV at the CVO GTG (fortunately, it was only very low the next AM, and not completly flat), I was able to air it up (thanks Jock!!) and get it to the dealer...they do NOT plug tires, so put a new one on and didn't cost me a red cent...I was prepared to pay the 50 bucks too, as I thought it would be that kind of deal.  What really made me get the coverage, was that if I hit something sharp edged and damaged the wheel, that's probably 1K right there...

On a side note: Ghost Town HD in Maggie Valley was fantastic in handling my problem...went out of their way to help me get things handled, even though they did not have a tire in stock. Called Asheville and had everything lined up for me to get right in with no wait.  Lost a day with the group riding the Dragon, but thank goodness the thing went down in the parking lot instead of on the Dragon.  Ghost Town is a small dealer, but the owner personally handled my problem with the tire!!   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

For the $964 4 year coverage that GRC quoted, you can take a gamble and use that money for repairs if needed.  Have been lucky this far on not buying an extended warranty for anything I own.  I'm not planning on buying an extended warranty for my 05..   Everyone has to make their own decision.

No deductible on "tire and wheel" coverage.

I knew where my policy was.....in the stack o' chit.

FW...this is an endless debate/discussion concerning the extended warranty.  Basically, it's an insurance policy that you hope you'll never need, but is there if you do.  If you've got the bucks laying around to pay for things IF they ever happen, then you probably don't need the coverage, but for me, it was the best thing to get the warranty, "just in case".  But, I plan on keeping the bike for a long time, and even if I didn't for some reason, I personally think it would help a buyer out to know they had some kind of warranty on the bike.  But, that's just my opinion, and it's like an ahole...everybody has one...

I just got a quote from Killer Creek HD for a 3 year extended warranty...$1774 which includes the tire and wheel coverage.  There is a $50 deductible on the warranty but $0 deductible on the tire and wheel coverage (as Terry said).  This sounds very expensive to me.  You cannot buy just the tire and wheel coverage.  I think I will roll the dice and take my chances....Historically I have not had a problem with my previous 8 Harleys.  I will likely sell this one next year anyway, depending on the SE models for 08.

BTW , Killer Creek has an 07 Blue SE Ultra coming in that is not spoken for.  Don't know what premium over msrp they are asking but knowing them I am sure it's higher.  770-777-1000.
Thanks for all the advice guys ! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I got the 7-year Extended w/the tire/wheel options, cost me a tad over $1800.  I financed that into the loan...I don't usually have that kind of cash laying around, and if I did, it wouldn't be laying around very long.  [smiley=coolblue.gif] For me, it's a piece of mind issue, and the tire/wheel coverage is definitely nice.  I wish they had offered that when I bought my 02...I took a nail in the rear tire one time, then about 6 months later a sheet metal screw in the front tire, that alone would have paid for the tire/wheel and part of my extended warranty.  I now carry a plug kit and a portable compressor in one of my bags.  Can never be too prepared....
Cheers [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif],

Terry is giving the straight scope here......ie, yes, it's transferrable or you can pro rate it and get the rest back at the time you sell the bike, etc.

I too have it for seven years.  I can tell you that it's been a huge piece of mind for me on my last three bikes it's more than paid for itself.  This bike here.......the cam chain tensioners went south on my way back from Sturgis.  I also got a tire out of it already, too.
