Charlie, under 2000 RPM in any gear except first is lugging the engine. If you're slightly below, and roll on slowly, you're OK. But the engine is a dog at those RPM's. It's just as easy to keep it above 2000. And just as easy and a lot more fun to keep it at 3000! ;)

You are right on Hoist.  I've never ridden any of my Harleys below 2k.  Seems to me the 110 likes 2,400 min and really shines at about 2,700 and above.

The cam falls off sharply at about 4500 RPM. Short-shifting between 3000 and 4000 yields good and fun results. If your trying for all out, pull it to 5000 so you're at higher RPM for the next shift and keep pulling. This should take you right up to 120. You're waisting your time and engine bringing it above 5000. The stock cams wont get you 140 MPH, but the SE 251 cams should get you both better top and bottom end performance, without going too crazy. With all these crazy 110 motor problems, I'm not going too radical now and am considering the 251's. Rode Ghost Rider's bike with those cams in it last week and they seem to fill the voids that the stock SE 255's give you.

Howie,
You're absolutely right.  About the only time I'm below 2000 rpms is when I first roll out from a stop...I like to run between 2500 and 3200 rpms when possible.

Running either a 103 or a 110 at anything below 2k RPM consistantly is potentially damaging to the engine/drive train.  The "Sweet Spot" for the 103 seems to be from 2800 up, on the 110 a bit lower starting point.  My motor rarely sees 2K for anything but a half second...it does not feel right under my left foot otherwise.

With the 6 speed, the RPM's you're turning should be dead on.  Above 70mph before using 6th, IMO.

Can't say I agree, TC!  Nobody would run at that speed consistently, I hope, but I can assure you that my friend's 103 and my 110 are happy from about 1500rpm up.....
