rpms and speeds on 07 se ultra
« on: May 20, 2007, 11:20:12 PM »

ok guys i need some feed back. i took atrip this weekend to the ruidoso rally in nm. while on the trip i notice that in order to use the six gear and the bike to run good i have to be above  85 mph or above, i set the cruise control at 80mph and the rpm goes about 2700 to 2800 i want to know if this is normal on this bike? by the way i am running v and h true duals with stock mufflers and hd air cleaner no race tuner yet.

I believe your bike is running just as it should, rpm versus speed. :)

those are proper numbers.  At 75 mph, I'm at about 2700 and at 80 I'm just under 3000...mine pulls well at anything above 2000 rpms in 6th.  If I inadvertently go below 2000 forgedaboutit :P

What Red said.

You are right on target. 6th gear is an 'overdrive' if you will. I find that I rarely use it or need it. When on the Deuce however, I'm always looking for another gear.

Mine pulls with no difficulty from around 1500rpm  in 6th :2vrolijk_21: but to pull well, needs 2000rpm. 80mph is almost exactly 3000 rpm, and 6th is fine WAY below that speed!

I find myself going into 6th at about 55 and have no problems tooling along at that speed, or accelerating from there.

I find myself going into 6th above 80 and have no problem accelerating from there! ;) Below that, it's a dog. You can ride below that for mileage, but down expect neck snapping roll-ons! The cam kicks in good at around 2700-2800 RPM. If you want roll-on power, don't keep it below that. If you don't care about that, don't tqke it below 2000 RPM ever! That's lugging. I find it lugging even at 2200-2400 on inclines too! Stay on the cam. You can feel that real good. On the cam RPM range is 2800 to 4500. Have fun with it! Hoist! 8)

harleyan,

My SERK #'s are about the same as you are running, no concerns brother, just roll on it. Below 2400 I lag a bit, she likes to be right at 3000 and takes off when I roll on the throttle.

For hoist, or other experts. LOL. For the stock cam what is the top RPM range? Haven't had it over 4000.

Mine isn't lugging at 2000 and a little below, Howie!  It's all torque with this engine, not being on the cam, that counts here. Sure, it won't give you the neck-jerking roll ons, but lugging it ain't!

SOKOOL

The cam falls off sharply at about 4500 RPM. Short-shifting between 3000 and 4000 yields good and fun results. If your trying for all out, pull it to 5000 so you're at higher RPM for the next shift and keep pulling. This should take you right up to 120. You're waisting your time and engine bringing it above 5000. The stock cams wont get you 140 MPH, but the SE 251 cams should get you both better top and bottom end performance, without going too crazy. With all these crazy 110 motor problems, I'm not going too radical now and am considering the 251's. Rode Ghost Rider's bike with those cams in it last week and they seem to fill the voids that the stock SE 255's give you.

Charlie, under 2000 RPM in any gear except first is lugging the engine. If you're slightly below, and roll on slowly, you're OK. But the engine is a dog at those RPM's. It's just as easy to keep it above 2000. And just as easy and a lot more fun to keep it at 3000! ;)

I added the Screamin' Eagle 6-Speed to my Screamin' Eagle 103 and it seems like you are well within the numbers......
