EITMS Reflash
« on: August 23, 2007, 02:18:14 AM »

Has anyone done the EITMS reflash which cuts off fuel to the rear cylinder when at idle? I was wondering if there is any noticeable lag to turn back on the rear cylinder when accelerating. Since the last reflash there have been a couple of times the bike backfired and quit at idle. I wonder if the EITMS reflash would increase the chance of the engine dying.

What year/model is the bike?
On 07's there is a engine management that incrementally shuts down the rear cylinder when engine head temps are high. It makes for a terrible idle at the light and will reduce rpm and oil pressure. In other words, it goes "down hill fast" as far as engine running is concerned.
When they did the last reflash, did they do anything to the idle setup?

What exactly do you mean EITMS reflash.   It is a function that is either turned on or turned off.   The only reflash that was done was to help cure heating issues where Moco made some changes and richened up the base map.   As I understand it those without a SERT have the ability to have it turned on one time for free if you wanted it, but there were no changes to the EITMS.

Please clarify what your asking or saying.

Unbalanced, here it is. It turns the rear cylinder into an air pump, not fuel, no spark!

Required Dealer Action:

Activating Engine Idle Temperature Management System (EITMS)

Upon request of the customer, apply the necessary optional dealer enabled engine calibration to activate the EITMS
capability using the Digital Technician Tool. Review/explain the following system function to the customer.

Guess this is like splitting hairs and it really doesn't matter.  Some I see are using the term reflash to mean enable the functionality.   Yes you are loading the ECM package back into the ECM with the EITMS enabled and I guess could be considered a flashing or reflashing of the ECM, but the only true reflash was to fix the lean condition and hot running by uploading a richer fuel map by the MoCo on stock bikes.

Mine is an 07 FLHTCUSE2. I took it in for service for a flash update about 6 months ago in response to a notice from MoCo. This seemed to be the start of the occasional backfire.

From what I read in the HD Enthusiast blurb received yesterday the EITMS is something that you have to ask to have turned on. Since I never asked for EITMS to be turned on I assume it is still firing on both cylinders at idle. It's certainly still hot enough.

I am considering whether to have the EITMS function turned on to reduce the heat. Has anybody had the EITMS, no fuel to the rear cylinder at ide, function turned on? Is anyone planning to have this done? I realize that correcting the lean factory setting and changing the exhaust is the best solution, but at this point I am keeping the bike California stock.

Sorry for the confusion on the terminology. I was just repeating the wording from the message sent by MoCo.

Goin Mobile,

No worries about the verbage.   The only place the EITMS will help you is when the bike is in an overheated state.   Then the rear cylinder will shut down, btw when it does this it is supposed to have a horrid smell that accompanies it.

Personally since my bike is tuned and has true duals I have chosen to leave it off.   I don't know anyone actually running this with it turned on.   You are right though if you don't have a SERT you have to ask them to turn it on and they will do so for free the first time.    How much into being a guinea pig are you, you might want to try it and give us some feedback on it.   I am sure some of the CA people might really like to know if it is a worthwhile feature to have turned on for those having to live up to CARB standards.

Sorry wish I had more information, but I haven't had the heating issues since I put the SERT in just the leaking gaskets or I would have probably given it a test by now.
