Can't really explain the drop in mileage , but I've ridden the same 200 mile loop several times , all about the same pace. Pre -IDS 43mpg , post IDS 40 mpg.  In terms of resistance, either backing it out or pushing it in to the garage , there is more perceptible resistance.

giving up 12 miles to the tank ( I don't run it past 4gal) is no big deal, and the increase in smoothness and perceived acceleration is worth it.  Being able to run easy at 60 in 6th is nice as well.

Check your belt tension - an overtightened belt will create more resistance.  I cannot see anyway the IDS itself can create more resistance or reduce mpg....

Nidam posted back on the first page that it dropped his mileage by 3mpg and that there was more resistance in with the IDS pulley, doesn't make any sense to me.  It's a simple replacement, as long as it's the same size pulley it should change nothing related to mileage.  Perhaps something didn't get installed right on his.

Have seen only one up close but then didn't pay attention enough to notice if the outer pulley could slip on the inner hub part.  Assuming not maybe the belt is just way tight.  Or....  maybe it just feels so much smoother now that the throttle is getting twisted a bit more ::) ?

Don - I installed the IDS this past weekend.  The outer pulley interlocks with the inner hub.  It is not possible to slip...Scott

Saw your prior post on that after I'd already written ahead (really need to read it all before posting Don!).  Was assuming they must be keyed or dogged someway.

Another question since you've had the hands on.  What, if anything, becomes serviceable or wear components with the IDS?  Obviously there's the bearing.  Anything else?

Nothing really, other then I suppose that eventually the rubber inserts will wear at the contact points...  It is a pretty simple design.  Although won't be riding my bike until I get a motor back together, I suspect I will agree with the reports of significant improvement....

Knowing HD Service, maybe it was installed wrong and making contact with something it shouldn't.....

I've put 400 mile on the bike since the change , the only negative is a drop of 3mpg, and it's a bit harder to push due to more resistance in the pulley (which may account for the drop in mpg).

So fat this has been a popular mod, the V-rods have always had it. I can see the MoCo coming out with a retrofit to earlier years if they sell enough.
since the IDS install i have increased my mileage since I can now use 6th gear at 60 instead of 70. Plus i now use 5th gear at 55 instead of 4th since 4th just felt smoother. i have no problem pushing the bike around. Still feels just like old sprocket did. Billy
