engine ping
« on: July 16, 2008, 09:22:59 AM »

Scooter, new to board. Have 05 SEEG and 06 ultra. Anyone using the zipper 575 cam on se 103 have ANY PING ON LITE ACCELL 2200-3000 rpm like going up hill or leaning on the throttle to push a strong head wind. My 06 ultra is persistant in this area.  am considering 103 build for based on my cvo bike. already have yheads an dpistons and cams and would use se forged stroker crank. Just don't want any more ping. In the southwest best gas we get is 90-91 octane thaT IS NOT ALWAYS GOOD GAS. THANKS

your problem is most likely because you dropped in a cam without consulting a builder. besides, its too much/wrong cam for 88 inches. there is more to doing this right!

Speaking only to the 575 cam in an otherwise internally stock 103 I've been there.  It ran very very well with no pinging when given the benefit of a good tune.

i musta misunderstood. he labeled his bike 06 ultra, which would be 88 inches. if it is 103, disregard my previous post.

He'd written:

Later in his post he'd written he was considering a 103 build (for the 88 I also assumed) and was hoping to avoid gaining detonation problems if he did so.  Probably not considering that a 103 build after the fact will very likely use different heads than those stock on the SEEG.  So it wouldn't be a direct apples-to-apples 103 build anyway.

Mine pinged until I changed to true dual headpipes and Don's tune and no pinging from 45-95 degree weather.  After doing the 575's and not the TD's or Don's tune, it pinged between 2-3000 rpm's on any acceleration or going up hills.  Pinged bad in Maggie valley.

That was a good tune with duals.  My bike ran great in that configuration.  Not that it's not running great now.  It is.  But if I'd stayed right there I'd have been completely happy with the bike's performance.
