09 serg/09 seultra test ride
« on: September 06, 2008, 01:44:16 PM »

Went to Harley Davidson of Dallas this past Friday(yesterday) for the Harley Demo rides. Rode the 09 SERG first---Orange/blk. Loved the bike. Windshield wasn't as bad as I have read here , but if you're a serious rider then you'll want to replace it with something taller to fit your height. The shorty is basically worthless for wind and element protection . But again not as bad as I have read on this site. I was real disappointed in the fairing glove boxes. For 31k plus tt&l you would think they could have come up with something better than this. Cheap , Cheap , Cheap. Flimsy doors. You have to turn the handlebar out of the way to open them also . You get a nifty little cover that supposedly sheds water for the exposed air cleaner when riding in the rain. I was concerned about that. The tech guys say it works. For a lowered bike the suspension was surprisingly good. A little more firm than normal , but the whole bike has that feel. Very smooth and firm all over. Handles really well and doesn't feel heavy at all even though they are about 40 lbs heavier.
Next I rode the SE ultra--Autumn Haze/electric orange. Noticed the 889 lbs immediately when lifting it off the side stand , but quickly went away when I let the clutch out. Bike makes lots of noise through the air cleaner when accelerating, probably needs a less restrictive filter. I wasn't too impressed with their new supposedly suspension seat. My ass was burning after only 2 miles . Also its got some  imitation looking shark skin sewn into the center , looks really cheap! I don't know why HD doesn't let Mustang or Corbin or someone make their seats. Theirs just don't work if you ride much. I know very few people that ride long distances that keep the stock seats. Fly by wire throttle is pretty much on or off. That would take me some real getting used to. Both bikes were like that with the SERG being the worst. You can't feel the motor anymore. Its a real artificial kind of acceleration and you have to use very light hand pressure. The slightest bumps in the pavement will make you move the throttle and the response is very jerky. Like I said---on /  off kind of feeling. All that aside the motorcycles were nicely painted , plenty of power, comfortable , great sound, super suspension , suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper  brakes. That was probably the highlight ---the new ABS brakes. What an improvement. Lastly-----31k and 36k respectively is in my mind getting a little ridiculous. These bikes should be in the mid 20's range I think. Also the color matched lowers for the SERG are $200 higher than lowers for other harleys in their catalogue and they are not even vented. This is gouging! The color matched chopped tour paks for the SERG's are $1199,and a solid color chopped for say flht is $724-------$475 higher. That says to me , we know you can afford it so we are gonna charge it. I have a friend in the body shop business and he says the paint is not the problem ---they are just gouging! So there you have it . My opinion-------use it for what its worth.

At least they give you the option of buying a king tour pac. I made the mistake of assuming that I could buy one for my SERK . It was a poor assumption on my part. KB

I put my deposit down this past Friday and since then I've been admiring every pic I can find of this bike. In regard to your comment about pricing should be in the mid $20's range. . . I did my best to put it together using the base model at $18,599.00. What I came up with was around (estimated)$27,822.00 to turn a base model into a SERG replica, key word "Replica"!! This doesn't include any labor seeing HD is starting raw and would not need to R&R anything.

$18,599.00 Base price (black)
$27,822.00 Replica Price (minus labor)
$30,999.00 Real Thing
$4177.00 Difference

I'm far from an expert on this so anyone chiming in would be appreciated.

About the King tour pak comment-------They do not offer the king tour pak in the SERG colors and I am told that they will not custom paint one for you by many dealers. Also they do not offer the other lowers in the SERG colors so you are screwed there also.
As for the cost analysis----pretty good logic but you are working off retail pricing. Who knows what their cost is , but I would love to see this bike worked  up from a cost basis and then add a fair profit for the dealer. I never have agreed that selling their bikes at above MSRP was fair , but the market allows it so what can I say. If customers just refused to pay more than MSRP and let the bikes sit on the floor for awhile that might change things. ------But they won't.

I think part of the problem with HD pricing these collector bikes is they're seeing customer purchasing them with no intensions of keeping them and only to flip them for a profit. I've already seen more then one with asking prices of $38,000.00 plus. That certainly does not justify over pricing, but just a thought. Factoring in they are Limited Additions counts for something as well I would guess.

And you're right . . . I used retail prices on all of the aftermarket mods I could think of. But after reading my Iron Works mag highlighting the SERG, I missed alot of chrome and other items that come with or on the bike.

Personally, I don't give a dam, the bike is outstanding and I can't wait till it's in my garage. :huepfenjump3:

Thanks!
