Cat. Conv. in all 09 CVO touring bikes
« on: February 17, 2009, 03:30:05 PM »

Can anyone provide me with a link to prove to a salesman at my MoCo dealership that all 09 CVO touring bikes come with the cat. conv. in the headpipe? He is telling potential customers that only the California CVO touring bikes have them, but not the touring CVO's he's selling. I bought mine in Minnesota and I live in Utah.

It doesn't help that my owner's manual for my FLHTCUSE4, on page 29 reads: "CATALYTIC CONVERTER  All Custom Vehicle Operations Touring motorcycles for international and California markets have a catalytic converter in the exhaust pipe collector."

Thanks.

Just did a search on google for catalytic converters in 2009 Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle (<-click that link), but it would probably be easier to find another salesman that knew his product then convince this guy something that is on the internet. :nixweiss:

If I show him this link, he'll just say it's another California bike, just like the one I bought in Minnesota.

Probably a waste of time, The amount of misinformation that originates at dealerships is legend. As soon as one of his buyers.pulls the right muffler he will figure it out.

This will get a big laugh from many/most of the people on this site who have tried talking to H-D Customer disService in the past, but how about calling them and asking for a clarification?  The manual is in error, as we all figured out back at the beginning of the model year, and I would hope that H-D has found that out by now.  Maybe you could talk them into emailing or snail mailing you a correction that you could share with the salesman.  Failing that, offer a wager and have him get a tech to remove the right side muffler on one of his "non-catalyst" CVO's.  When he runs into that honeycomb-like structure plugging up the collector, perhaps he will believe you.  Or, if he is a true and experienced Harley salesman he will at least offer a new BS story to replace the old story.

You know, it's not just the sales people.

I went by a local dealership yesterday to see if they had a take-off headpipe from a stock, non-CVO 2009 touring bike.

Two mechanics were sitting behind the counter having lunch. When I explained to them why I wanted it, almost in unison they said, "The cats are in the mufflers." I offered to bet them both a month's salary that I was right and they were wrong. Their faces both lit up for a second, then they realized they weren't certain they were right.

After establishing that they did not have any take-offs around, I wished them a good day and walked away, back to my '09 SERG for the ride back to work. I heard them mumbling as I walked away. I'm not sure they believed me.

You could also refer him to the Parts Manual.  It only specs one item, #68555-09, Exhaust Pipe Assembly, catalytic, (Domestic, Canada,  California)(Chrome).

Wish I'd thought about that... That's authoritative!

Ya, I sent him an email of these two pics and he said the parts manual was a mistake, and pointed out how the International model has the exhaust pipe listed as index no. 42 yet the picture shows it as item 43. That was his evidence the parts manual is screwed up. Then he told me to read my owner's manual and told me I should have bought my bike from him and I wouldn't have needed to take it to Fullsac. I told him if he could have gotten me one sooner than June I would have bought an 09 CUSE4 from him...but I'd still have to see Steve at Fullsac to get the cat chisled out and welded back together. lol

What a chithead!

When I picked up my '09 SERG, the salesman was asking about my plans for maintenance and service. I told him I'd probably do most of my own and that I'd probably ditch SYN3 and go to Amsoil at 1K.

He shook his head and said, "That will void your warranty. If you ever have a problem with the engine, the first thing that Harley will ask is what kind of oil you are using. If it's not Harley oil, they'll deny your claim."

B-U-L-L-C-H-I-T!!!

Apparently, this salesman has never heard of the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975...

Hey Randy
Hows that "non" Cat CVO running? Had a chance to ride it?
I know it was snowing in your area this morning.

Hi Steve, thanks for asking. I've put 400 miles on my bike since seeing you in beautiful Lake Havasu for the cat work and your 2 inch baffles. The bike is running great and I love the performance upgrade you gave it. I'm still running it in break-in mode though. I'm doing a lot of cosmetic and other performance upgrades on the bike now and will post pics in a few weeks.
