when I picked up my bike It had 1 Mi on it,even took a foto of it.I don't know what standard practice is but they didn't put any miles on it ,they told me it was my job, nice to have a dealer that treats you like family, heck a few of my friends work there(were friends with them before they got a job there)It even helps you to get somethings sometimes ;)

The dealer where I got my last 2 bikes has 7 miles on every new bike in the showroom.  Apparently, they have a designated test run route for the bike.  If I got it delivered, at this time of the year especially, and there was something obviously wrong with the bike the first time I took it for a ride, I'd sure be complaining that they didn't take it for a test ride before handing it over to me.  I happened to have nice weather when I picked mine up in November and it shifted horribly.  The next day, when I rode it again, the shifting got very smooth after a few more miles.  I don't know if this is typical or not.  I remember having trouble finding neutral on the bike before that on the first day, and that also worked out probably by day 2.  It seemed to me as though it needed a slight bit of break in to shift properly.  Anybody else notice that or was I just imagining it and got used the bike by day 2?

Probably had more to do with getting used to the hydraulic clutch.  They tend to drag until the plates wear in, and you have to pull the lever all the way to the grip.  If someone is used to a cable operated clutch that is adjusted to release and engage further from the grip, the Harley hydraulics take some getting used to.

I agree that the dealer should perform a comprehensive inspection and road test.  Besides the fact that they are being paid by H-D and in most cases also by the customer to do so, it is just good business.  If you want repeat business and referrals, it is usually pretty smart to make sure your customer can actually make it the 30 miles home without a major failure.  I certainly wish my selling dealer had done more than just wipe off the dust, maybe I wouldn't have such a negative feeling about both him and the bike.

Every bike that comes out of the factory is put through a complete vehicle roll test.  They put anywhere from 3-5 miles on the bike while it's hooked up to the computer which flashes the ECM and makes other verifications, they check all lights, horns, brakes, radio among other stuff.  Take a tour of the factory in York (or KC) and you'll see them roll testing the bikes.  So don't think it's all dealers miles or some mechanics going WOT (Wide open throttle) on your new scoot.

Yeah, after I watched them running those new motors up in the RPM band, I felt like the damage had already been done if it was gonna happen to the new surfaces.  :nervous:   spyder
