Dealer Test Mileage
« on: February 19, 2009, 06:54:32 PM »

Hi, I am planning to pick up my new SEUC tomorrow. Went to see if it was prepped today and it's ready. Am questioning of the need to ride "my" new bike 8 miles on what have been slightly snow covered roads in northern Illinois. Am I being overly sensitive about that test drive? Is there anything I should be looking at when I go to get the bike tomorrow, given that the service tech rode it today in less than optimal conditions on roads that probably still have some residue of salt on them? Any other thoughts about what you'd do over when getting your new bike? Thanks   ;)

I once did not buy a bike with 7 or 8 miles on odometer at delivery. I had ordered the bike and did not appreciate the miles. Most of the new bikes I have purchased had 2 to 3 miles on odometer.

The last part of the dealer prep procedure from H-D calls for a test ride of approximately 10 miles.  You should be happy that your dealer is one of the very few who actually does the prep; most bikes get delivered with the 1 or 2 miles on the odometer from the factory and no test ride by the dealer (no real inspections either).  If you're worried about salt, have the dealership wash the bike thoroughly before you pick it up, if they haven't done so already.  I assume you're going to trailer it home?

Personally, I'd be satisified if they filled the fluids properly and tightened all the nuts and bolts!   :2vrolijk_21:

And I'd be a bit pissed if they road my new ride on salty snow covered roads...whether they washed it afterwards or not...    ???

Concur.  Especially if one ordered and paid for it.......test ride, particularly in less than optimal conditions, should be at the new owner's discretion.  JMHO.

Our bikes have always had between 3 and 11 miles. 11 miles were on the 07 CVO I think because a few techs wanted to ride the new 110.

Every new bike at both dealerships in the group I do business with has 10-11 miles on it. Part of the dealer prep.

I would not be the least bit concerned. If it had 15-20 miles on it I wouldn't be happy, especially if it was a CVO. At least with the wet and snowy roads, you know they didn't ride it hard.

I don't mind 8-14 miles the dealer should put on a bike for the test ride, maybe the oil pump wouild have broke on them rather than me.

I am one who would not appreciate the test ride on salt covered and/or snow covered roads. I ride year round, regardless of temperature. The only thing that keeps my bike parked is dirty winter roads. I have seen bikes that have been ridden on salt covered roads and noticed the edges of the cooling fins are oxidized. If you still want the bike, have the dealer wash it THOROUGHLY.

That is one thing I'd look for... Look at the (tranny cover?) chrome behind the exhaust to see if the exhaust is overly colored. The chrome covers hide this for the most part, but you can catch the reflection in the chrome goodies behind the exhaust.

where at in IL. I picked mine up two weeks ago when it was summer from berwyn, if your dealer has a dyno have them run it for 10 or 15 minutes just to shake it down not a tuning run or with a load, then have them throw it on a truck and deliver, for 40k they should have no problem, and if its from Illinois they will.

Hi Jim, the dealer is in Libertyville. Found out this morning they rode it on this past monday when it was just cold out, no snow or visible road salt. Would have preferred the dyno idea, but at least they did check it out. Thanks everyone for your input. Hopefully will have it delivered today or next Monday. Will post pics then.
