out of curiousity what bikes have the ability to roll forward on the throttle to activate the ETMS? My 09 springer doesn't seem to do that, but maybe i'm doing somthing wrong.
Only the electronic throttle bikes, which so far means Touring models. The Softails and Dyna's require a download from your dealer to turn the EITMS off or back on. I believe it can be done with a TTS or SEST as well.
BTW, in the interest of accuracy, a previous post that indicated you could roll the throttle forward to turn off the rear cylinder at will is incorrect. With the engine running, rolling the throttle grip forward will provide a little exercise for your wrist, but it won't affect the EITMS. There is a routine outlined in the manual for turning the system on or off that goes something like this:
(I'm typing this from memory, so you may want to read the manual for the exact procedure.)
Run/Stop switch in the Run position.
Ignition switch in the On position, Do Not Start the engine.
Roll the throttle grip forward and hold it, observe the cruise control light in the tach.
If the light shows red, the EITMS is off. If it shows green, the EITMS is on.
If you want to change the On/Off status, release the throttle grip and roll it forward again to make the change, when the light is the color you want release the grip and turn off the ignition.
Once the system is turned on, the actual activation is fully automatic. When the engine temperature reaches a certain point, with the engine at idle and the bike at rest with either the trans in neutral or the clutch disengaged, the ECM will shut down the rear cylinder. When any of those conditions change, the rear cylinder will be reactivated.
