a local dealer tried this with me about 10 years ago - i will NEVER buy anything from them - and then they tried to stick me later....

i was looking for a ultra with sidecar or road king with sidecar, they advertised a used "road king with sidecar" for x bux

i went and looked at it, bike with sidecar x bux, had my wife look at it, applied for finance, got approved went in

invoice was for 5k more than price - well the 5k is for the sidecar - fu2 buddy [i KNEW the msrp for the combo & i KNEW how used it was..... never titled demo ride with 3kmiles and all the interior of the sidecar needing serious help.... the price advertised was a good price for its as is condition]

a friend tipped me off that a different dealer would play straight - found a bike that would work, price that worked - went to do the finance - the first dealer was still holding the finance and wanted the second one to pay them to release it - they told the first one fu2 buddy and had a long talk with hd finance.

the bike and sidecar i have now is the second one i have gotten from the dealer that played straight...

this type of bait and switch is NOT uncommon.

When getting a quote, always get it in writing and make sure that the VIN is on the paperwork.  If not, it's all hypothetical.  (My ex-girlfriend was shopping for a car - the dealer gave her a written quote for a car that he did not have on his lot yet, so there was no VIN on the quote.  When the car arrived, they told her the price had gone up by 4% due to mid-year factory increase.  She walked.  The dealer was furious, telling her that they had a deal.  We replied that the quote sheet did not indicate any specific vehicle, since there was no VIN.  They were still angry, but it was their own fault for not putting on the VIN).

the vin was on the paperwork - but in minnesota the state ignores the sidecar vin... that deal didnt change till i had finance and cash in hand in the door to pick it up. i had a copy of the emails in hand - they said that emails didnt count it had to be hand written or faxed.

walking was the proper choice

they were all mad that the bait and switch didnt work, the guy actually told me to my face that if i wanted the bike i should just sign the paper work. i politely told him he was a liar and i was not doing any biz with them ever & left, have never been in the door since

My bud just got a 11 street glide, the dealer is a good hour away. He had the bike home for 3 days before he noticed a paint defect in the saddle bag. I saw it also and under further exam with the sun hitting it you could see the right bag had no orange peel and the left one did. He called the dealer and they said bring it in. He went back the next day and they swapped the bags off another of the same color and changed the locks on the spot. Happy customer.
Now I wonder if they try to sell the bike that they put those bags on and hope the next customer does not notice.

possibly....

fortunately the dealer had more than one of the same bike to swap parts from... either until they got the warranty parts to replace OR until the next buyer doesnt notice....
