Why doesn't HD use gear drive cams and do away with tensioners all together?

If the crank slips, or sissors, it'll rip the teeth off the gear drive(s) causing all types of V-Twin havoc.
Trust me, we've witnessed that. :'(
BTW those should NOT be installed if crankshaft T.I.R. is in excess of .003".

Wrong.  See the post above yours.  Even if your crank is within the recommended limits for TIR of the pinion shaft at the time you install the gears, that doesn't mean it will stay that way.  And when the crank scissors, it will destroy those gear drives a lot quicker than a chain system.  There is no "give" in gear drives.

From what little I know about the cranks in the 96" and the 110" motors, I would not even consider gear driven cams unless the cases were split and the crank was trued and welded.

BUT, if all is well, a gear-driven cam set WILL show 2.5-4 hp, and 2.5-4 ft/lbs over/above it's chain-driven counterpart, as back/back testing, here, alerted us to that over a decade ago. :)
