Radio antenna coax fitting type (2011 FLTRUSE)
« on: September 23, 2012, 10:53:22 PM »

I lost my AM/FM at about 16K miles.  Troubleshooting revealed an intermittent open or short in the female coax connector at the antenna itself (left rear of the tour pack).  After a few 'wiggle' fixes it's now totally dead.  I can stick a short wire about an inch in and get reception, so I know the problem is within the crimp on connector.  My problem is that I can't identify the connector type.  I have enough slack to cut this one off an install new, but I can't figure out what kind of connector it is.  Doing some internet research turns up more than a dozen different coax connector types but I haven't been able to find one that looks like this.  Anyone know what it is?  A part number would help but I'm afraid all I'd get from the Harley parts fiche would be the whole cable assembly.

Sorry I don't know the part because I do not have that bike.  How about riding over to a Radio Shack? (Or any other electronics parts store.)

Save your self a ton of headache and install the hidden antenna under your batwing. Problem solved!!!!

That might work IF he had a batwing. He posted it's a FLRTUSE.

X2 on the Radio Shack trip.

I went to Radio Shack -- nothing even close.  I've researched on the web and there must be more than 25 different coax connector types.  I've looked at over a hundred pictures of connectors but nothing looks close to this.   It's interesting in that they put the male plug on the antenna end (like a bulkhead connector) and the female end on the cable which is just the reverse of most installation examples.  Most installations use the female connector for fixed connectors.  If I can't find a compatable replacement, my next option is to see if I can use my Dremel tool to cut the barrel where it's crimped and pull the cable, trim it and reconnect.  Since it's inside and protected, weather isn't an issue and there's a 90 degree strain relief bracket attached to the connector.  I really don't want to have to order the whole cable assembly if I can avoid it.  BTW, I've heard enough horror stories about the reduced reception with the 'hidden' antenna that I don't want to go that route.  Besides, I'd still have the CB antenna back there so I wouldn't be cleaning up the rear unless I removed both.  I don't mind the look of the dual antennas.
