Engine ticking sound?
« on: August 28, 2006, 06:31:07 PM »

I just bought a new 07'SE ultra and was wondering if it's normal to hear a ticking sound from the motor?  Not  very loud like a rapping but more of a ticking.  Im used to metric bikes which sound like sewing machines so please excuse my ignorance for asking.  [smiley=confused5.gif]

Is this sound while you're riding or just after you parked it?

I can't speak for the '07's yet, but it always seems that there's always some kind of odd noise coming from the drivetrain that you may or may have not heard before.  I think that depends on the conditions you are riding in, etc..  When there is no cross winds, etc.. I could always swear that I hear something different.

I would say that unless it gets louder, or doesn't turn into a "knock", I wouldn't worry too much about it just yet.

Another thing might be an exhaust leak.  That is the closest I've ever heard that sounded like a tick.  Check your header bolts and fitment to your mufflers.  It could be coming from there.

Just my 2 cents..

dozer,

That "ticking" you hear is most likely just the normal valve train noise you get with an air cooled Harley.  A Harley in many respects is a throwback to the technology of the '50's, and can't be compared to a metric machine with overhead cams, water cooling, etc.  My suggestion is to just ride and enjoy the bike, and if the sound bothers you too much try cranking up the stereo or going to a louder exhaust.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

In all seriousness, it's probably the normal valve train noise.  After you get fully acclimated to the bike, you'll be able to distinguish between the normal sounds and any abnormal ones.

Along with what grc (Jerry) said try listening to another scooter (Harley), and if possible another 110ci one (my guess is it's going to be normal valve train noise also). If the sound is the same/similar then ride it like you stole it. ;D

Dozer-
What GRC and FiredOOd said.  Compared to the Honda's you have, the HD motor will not be sewing machine quiet.  Sometimes the ticking will be worse than others.  Ride and enjoy.  Post how you like it once you get a few miles on her.

Ticking, rapping, clunky shifts, pinging sheet metal when you shut 'er down.......mmmm, just have to love it.

Last thing my salesman asked when I piled onto my brand new 76 FLH, "you ever have a Harley?"  "nope."

"Then when you leave out of here and hear all kind of noise from the tranny and it clunks when you shift, just keep on going, it's all part of owning a Harley."

That dOOd is right on!

A friend of mine called me a few months ago to talk about his motor.
He hadn't ridden it for about 5 months and said that it was ticking real bad and was worried it was going to blow up.
He only lives a mile away and said he would ride it over to my house.
I hopped on his and he got on mine and off to the belt loop around Charlotte we went.
After a few miles I realized there were no problems with his motor, it sounded normal for a Harley.
We stopped at a store and he said to me, Chip yours is about to blow up also, it sounds just like mine.
Bottom line,
It's a unique sound and once you get use to it remember, it will tell on itself when there's a problem!

Like the others said, you're just hearing "normal" valve train noise, and other associated noises the 103 puts out.  Guess I made the transition a little easier because I have a Ducati....ever heard a Duck's dry clutch when it's in neutral?  The noises from the 103 pale by comparison.

Just enjoy the ride....you'll get used to it and be able to distinguish when something is "rattling" as opposed to the odd noises which are normal. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
