SE Stage III Questions
« on: March 08, 2013, 06:46:57 PM »

After much research and riding several different combinations, I have ordered the SE Stage III kit, 10.5 to 1, 259 cams, SERT, for the '09 SERG to go along with the V&H PowerDuals, RSD mufflers & K&N already on the bike. All things considered, I feel that this setup will work for me.

I am asking for input from those that have experience with the SE kit???

The bike has ~10k mi, uses little to no oil, should I be looking to go oversize pistons-or new jugs?

What are the pros and cons? (I know I will lose a little tq off the low end, that is totally acceptable to me)

What #s should I be looking for ?

If you have one of these kits? how many miles do you have on it?

How suited is the SE kit for touring

What are the real world benefits (if any) of headwork with this setup? Who/what setup do you recommend?

What are the real world benefits (if any) of throttle body/work with this setup? What do you recommend for TB?

I know that is a lot of questions but,

any and all input is appreciated!!!

The bike has ~10k mi, uses little to no oil, should I be looking to go oversize pistons-or new jugs? You wont know until you tear it down, mine was fine at 3k

What are the pros and cons? (I know I will lose a little tq off the low end, everyone says that but its above 100 tq by 2500 rpm and stays above 100 till after 5500rpm that is totally acceptable to me)cons = slight cammed feeling on light trottle at lower revs around town. pros = pickup tq/hp, cooler running motor, extended rev range

What #s should I be looking for ? approx +10 tq (carrying further) and +15 hp from stage 1

If you have one of these kits? how many miles do you have on it?10k

How suited is the SE kit for touringGreat. I only ride with at least 2500rpm on the tach. That puts me in the fat part of tq/hp. pulls like a train from 55 to 120+ in fifth. The old 255 cams did not like much above 4500rpm giving you a 2000rpm rev range, now 4000 rpm rev range.

What are the real world benefits (if any) of headwork with this setup? Who/what setup do you recommend?More tq and hp with head work.

What are the real world benefits (if any) of throttle body/work with this setup? What do you recommend for TB?Not required as the stock tb can easily handle 120tq/hp

I know that is a lot of questions but,

any and all input is appreciated!!!The above are just my experience and opinions. Most people get scared with 47 degree intake close of the 259E and totally ignore duration/overlap/LSA, so they conclude this is a peaky cam. Its not, its a mid range cam. Added to that a motor not sounding like it's going to explode at higher revs = priceless

I just did the motor in mine with the help of a good friend.  I did some of the kit.  The Pistons 10.5:1 and the Cams 259E

I tore mine down with 2505 miles on it, two months old.

I went with .010 over pistons, so my cylinders would be bored and matched to the pistons and rings.

I went with woods directional lifters, I do not trust the SE lifters but hear the 13 lifters are improved.

I went with 5.3 injectors for more fuel

I went with a HPI 55mm throttle body on a 58mm intake

I had Don of Heads Designs by Dewey do the CVO porting on my heads, do the boring of the cylinders and set the compression at 10.8:1

I am using the TTS Master tune tuner.  I have a map from my friends bike in it now, he did the same build on a 12 last year.

Doc will be tuning it the 18th.  I will be over 120 on both HP and torque, maybe even over 125.

The only thing I would make sure and do is have the clearance check between the retainer and the valve seal with that camshaft. While it is listed as a bolt in it is right at the limit for clearance and I have seen more than one that the retainer was hitting the valve seals. If you read the Cam listing on page 82 of the 2013 catalog is says with "(updated with race springs)" But I do not see any springs listed for the Stage III 110 kit.

The SE reference is to the OEM 96 / 103" head. That said there is no interference with either the OEM beehive on the stock heads or the CVO 110 heads and springs, as they come from HD, with their supplied springs. Not an endorsement of either of the springs however when used with that cam. Personally I change them to an AV&V 650 lift beehive.
Interference will happen for sure with an OEM 88" head 99-2004 and stock springs.

I noticed that myself...

Thanks for clearing it up!
