By chance does that bike have a cam sensor,... 02 was some what of a cross over year I have seen them both ways. Common failure item and does what you are talking about. Heat the bike up let it sit.

Fuel is a simple one but if a part like the petcock fails that is not  something that comes and goes..  Vapor lock maybe by chance is the MIK carb hitting the cylinder fin this is common.. I wonder if the bowl is touching is the heat being transfered into the carb and evaporating the fuel.  That still seems like a long shor though. As that is more a hard re start and once running it will keep running.

moscooter, my 95 Heritage had the fuel petcock with the vacuum. The first time the bike gave me a problem was about a year after I bought it. Doing about 80MPH in the fast lane and just died. Pulled in the clutch got over to the side and coasted to a stop. Flicked the petcock from open to close  a couple of times and it started right up. Ironically when I received the mail that day there was a recall notice from Harley for the petcock. I took it in and had a pingle  installed without the vacuum line. No fuel delivery problems after that.CAHDBIKER
