Adding Audio out on newer GPS Garmin
« on: February 04, 2014, 10:33:04 PM »

Since most if not all of the newer standard GPS models do not offer an audio out, I started doing a little search on the internet and found an article that describes taking the normal speaker wires inside of a Garmin and adding an audio out plug.  Anyone else tried this?  Seems rather straight forward and just purchased a new Nuvi 2555lmt for $120 and thinking of making the modification and wiring it into my Aux in port on my radio.  I know it will void my Garmin warranty.  Since I can not honestly hear decent music going down the road anyways, thinking of using the Aux In feature on my radio to help when you can not see the screen real well.  I have one of the Radios that has the GPS built in, but thank you Harley, they do not offer any updates.  Besides the graphics are about worthless. I tried just using my smart phone and Google Maps, but you can not beat the GPS devices specifically designed for the task.  Anyone have a better solution besides purchasing the Zumo?  Just do not want to drop another $600-$700 into a GPS.

You can take the GPS apart cut the speaker wires and add the 3.5mm jack if you want. It will work.

Took it apart but limited on where you can place the connector, then decided to sit tight until my Ram mount comes in.  My luck I would put it right smack in the middle of some piece that holds the GPS on the mount.  It would have been so much easier if they would just have charged me an extra 25 cents when they were making the darn thing.  Just as a heads up if anyone else reads this; I saw another post where someone just used a phone recorder or induction coil and placed in right over the speaker and plugged that into the AUX port.  They can be had at Radio Shack according to the article.  They claimed it worked fine but thought I would prefer being able to plug it into the radio in my car when traveling with the top down and would be a little cleaner.  Will at least post if I was successful or not.  Thanks.

Go to radio shack and buy a 3.5mm Stereo extension cable. Cut it in half and choose which end you want to use, the male or female end. File or cut an opening in the case large enough to pass the cord through. Solder the leads from the cable to the leads going to the speaker, use heat shrink here to insure you don't have any problems with shorts. I would use the female end but that's me. Remember that the GPS May only have one speaker and you will be connecting to a stereo input on the radio. Use an ohm meter to trace the cable wires. It is up to you if you want to use a stereo hook up or a mono.

If you only have one speaker on the GPS then you will be going from mono in which case connect the tip and center ring leads on the cable together. The last ring will be ground connect one wire from the speaker to the last ring (ground) and the other speaker wire to the tip.

Tried to run wires and put a connecter right into the case but they are making the cases too narrow to accommodate.  Purchasing a cable and splitting it, then soldering it onto the speaker seems like a good plan B.  I did not want the cable/connector hanging out all of the time, but it will be mounted on my bike 90% of the time anyways so no big deal.  Jim, thanks for thinking outside the box.
