Dan, Iron Cross Audio is running a special on eBay - repair for $175.  You aren't going to find a used radio that cheap I don't think.

Thanks, I may do that. I went to eBay for head units but didn't see their ad. I'm trying something tonight and if it doesn't work, it's going to IC tomorrow.

Even if one did find a good used radio for about the same money it wouldn't have the internal enhancements/improvements that come with the Iron Cross fix.

Well guys, I GOT IT FIXED!!!!

I wiggled the face plate and I could get a light, but no screen words etc.

Apparently I got a little too enthusiastic taking off my fairing to start working on the handlebars.

So I took the radio out and popped the face plate off.  Under the face plate there is a 20 tab, or so, slide in connector between the face plate and the head unit.

The face plate had wires with little 45 degree bends in them right at the ends that would contact the flat tabs in the head unit.  These tabs are probably .050" wide.

I took a very fine point tool and went behind each one and flexed them toward the center of the connector.  I also had some fine abrasive stick that polish wiring terminals.

I put the face plate on while the radio was out and pulled over the rubber water sleeve and then plugged in the head unit.  I fired up with a red screen light and the HD logo popped up and then I had all my normal screens.

So I dodged a bullet on this one, lesson learned.

While I was fooling around with the radio I noticed that my volt meter light was out.  I changed out the bulb while it was exposed.  So two birds with one stone as they say.

I want to thank everyone for the suggestions and concern about helping me out, greatly appreciated.

Have a great evening...  :2vrolijk_21:  :2vrolijk_21:  :2vrolijk_21:

I e-mailed Iron Cross Radio and Tony got back with me very quickly.  At this point there doesn't seem to be any option with them other than sending it back.

They have a flat rate for repair/rebuild, $250.00.  Not that that's high, but I'm looking to get this done and back up without a $250 bill.

I'm going to go to the Parts Wanted and place an ad for a used '09 HK head unit.

Does anyone know what years will interchange?  I'm thinking that '08, '09, '10 and probably '11 will work, not sure about newer though.

If anyone has any other suggestion, please throw it out here and I'll try it.

Thanks again to all for the help and hopefully I can get this resolved without costing an arm and a leg...  :(  :(  :(
Although I've found their workmanship satisfactory, their use of substandard products was not. Emails requesting home alternative repair options resulted in their standard "you have to send the unit in", and they wouldn't sell me the needed part or provide a partial schematic. Jim at Metal Dragon offered an alternative solution with no down time which was gladly accepted.
Glad you pursued the issue further and rectified the problem.

THANKS AGAIN TO ALL...

I was lucky to be able to save this.

Not knowing how the face plate came off, I may have been able to just snap everything back together without tweaking anything.

When taking the radio out, the face plate came off out of the rear fairing quite easily.  So when I pushed down on the face plate and things lit up, I should have just pulled the radio out and reinstall the face plate.  I found out later that it was obviously not firmly attached to the head unit.  As they go in together from the front and slide up into the opening fully assembled.

Live an learn is my motto...

Again, appreciate all the suggestions and comments.  At least if this happens again and I can't fix it, there are some other options now.

Hope you all have a great day.

Thanks.

For right now it seems to be working.  After thinking about my issue, I really believe that the face plate had just come loose and not being familiar enough with the head unit, I could probably just snapped the face plate back without even pulling the radio.

I won't be able to ride much for a couple weeks, wife has weekend plans.

Don't hold up any repairs on his radio because of me.  I'm hoping the I'm good to go at this point.

Thanks everyone for the concern and help.
