H.D. garage door opener----question
« on: April 23, 2017, 03:00:42 PM »

 :-\

Had a big thunder storm thru my area a couple of weeks ago.  Took out one of my big screen TVs and the surround sound receiver for my other big screen plus other stuff including two of my garage door openers.  So I'm now in the middle of replacing the two openers.

One of them is the same door that I use to go in/out with my bike.  So I have the H.D. GDO setup that has worked OK on that door.

Just completed installing that new door opener,  but I note that the H.D. receiver that is plugged into a wall receptical does NOT have that little red lite glowing.  So I'm thinking the lightening surge took it out too.............Should that little red lite be on all the time or just when you are activating the system via your headlite switch on the bike.????

Yes, the light is on all the time and blinks when you are setting it up. I would also check the plug and the circuit breaker.

I'm an insurance adjuster, I see lots of lightning claim in the Tampa, FL area. yep, I am almost certain the HD plug is fried. Seems with most lightning strikes, the fragile electronics in the home go first. I am going to guess that your sprinkler system, if you have one is damaged along with cable or sat boxes.

Btw, did you submit an insurance claim under your homeowners policy, if you have one? You should have and you should get an electrician to run a check on all electrical circuits in the home.

Also, a little known fact about lightning strikes; they can eventually cause leaks in copper pipes if they are in the slab of the home (here in Fl, no basements, all plumbing is in the concrete slab)

Bingo,  you are correct in that my irrigation controller got zapped also.  Interesting result of that was when I called Rainbird,  the guy asked when did I buy it?  He asked to know the date code on the back of the unit.  Turns out I bought it mid last year.  He said they are warranteed for 3 years and they would send me a new one.  Hasn't shown up yet,  but I thought that was a pretty good result.   He didn't seem to care that it was due to a lightening strike. :nixweiss:

I did in fact call my insurance co.  but I have a $2500 deductible and although I may end up being close........I kinda think I will not get to that amount in order to file a claim for any in excess of the $2500. :-\

Of course if I could claim all the (labor) time I have already spent installing two complete new garage door openers (all by myself).........kinda tricky without an assist lifting the whole unit up to the ceiling.   :nervous:

Yeah, good call on no claim, Carrier frown on paying a claim less than $1,000.00 and they seem to make it up with rate increases by hiding that cost in some " insurance pool charge"

Fyi, in the future, hire someone to do all the work, Carriers cannot pay their insured to do their own work, they will pay a reasonable contractor estimate all day long. Also, a C clamp attached to the track right at the bottom wheel is a great tool to hold the door up when you install a door or an opener. Just remember to remove the clamp before trying the door opener, otherwise you will be heading back to Lowes of Home Depot!

Thanks for the feedback on insurance.  I gotta tell ya I consider most insurance as an "evil" necessity.  God forbid you make a claim. :-\

As to the C clamp.  That ideal works very well when dealing with GD spring adjustments.  However, assuming the door is reasonably balanced via the spring settings,  you just open/close it by hand.  There is no connection between the GDO and the door itself until you make it during the GDO installation,  thus no real threat of a slamming garage door in the process. :drink:

H.D. garage door opener ---HELP
« Reply #6 on: August 04, 2017, 12:46:45 PM »

I F*cked up by not taking a picture of the previous GD receiver wired into the GDoor opener.  I thought I was smart to use the updated receiver that came with my 2017 Limited CVO. Little did I know I was making more problems for myself.  I wired it as instructed, the last one worked awesome but as I recall uninstalling it it wasn't wired to the same contacts as the wall unit switch.  I think I may be amiss as the whole holding in the set button and cycling the Hi-Low switch.  I've got a 2005 Chamberlain Lift master 1/2hp worm drive. Any help is appreciated

If you guys (or a family member is) are vets, consider USAA for your insurance.  I have had two claims, one for a flooded basement due to a faulty water softener and another for a roof due to hail storm damage.  Deductible is only $500, and they will never drop you.
