Over 1500 plus posts before getting your bike on voiding your warranty this is what you come up with?? :P

Where've you been Sky? I said FTW when I got the bike! The next 1500 are on how to screw it up! Hopefully, someone might follow it, since the logic was sound. The idea of it was nuts, but the logic was sound! ;) Hoist! 8)

I don't think anyone's saying FTW completely. Doing performance mods voids the W.....ty per MoCo. Now, how do you handle that. First off, if the problem has nothing to do with the failure, you'll be covered. Frankly, I'm not convinced that it's a big benefit for me. I don't usually have a dealer work on my bikes. I have an '85 FXWG. W.....ty's long gone on that. I keep it running right and maintained, and don't have major failures. If and when I do, there are ways, thru a good Indy, to get things done without too much pain. Then there's engine stuff under W.....ty. This is the tricky one. You say if your dealer does the mods, then they'll guaranty your W.....ty, regardless of whether HD picks up the tab. If they're stand-up, they will. If you like the quality of service, and have them work on your bike, by all means proceed that way. If you know that deal will be good for 7 years, you're lucky! If I had them working on my bike for 7 years, I'd never be riding it. It'd be at the shop half the time and I'd be miserable. That's why I decided to do what I did. And I still think I have a decent chance of getting an engine done. That's why I'm still not doing any more than I've done until next winter. If this thing grenades itself, it will be this year. I'll try to make sure of that. Once you build a Wednesday bike, there's little to worry about. It's still a Harley, so there's always something. I fix them myself or indy. Again, you want the best guy for you working on your bike. Getting things fixed half-assed and continuing to bring it back for the same thing's not my idea of W.....ty!

So basically it comes down to, like everything else, what's best for you! I'm not having a place I'd rather not work on my bike, work on it, just because I might have a problem down the road fixed for free. I've never worried about it before and decided not to start worrying about it now! I'll just deal with it when it comes! I think this helps explain the attitude toward the W....ty. It's not condescending or arrogance, it's a personal decision based on individual comfort level, experience, and one's own knowledge about their bikes. If you just want to ride and know nothing technically about it, you'll probably use the dealer. If you know your chit and have connections, you probably won't.

That's my current $.02 and like everything else, is subject to change! ;) Hoist! 8)

Howie,
You must have an F'd-up dealership, if you think that badly of them.  I have at least three dealerships within 60 miles of me that I'd trust my bike with, and one that I wouldn't.  I don't even know if I'd buy a bike from a dealership that I didn't trust to work on it.  I also have a very good Indie that I go to for non-warranty work, and I trust him implicitly with my ride.  I'm into all the knowledge and technicality of the ride, I'm just not a good wrench when it comes to tearing things apart.  I also go with the attitude, if I "F" it up, I'm responsible for it, if they "F" it up, they're responsible to make it right.   But that's just me...everyone has their own way of doing things and neither is wrong or right, but is what that individual feels is best for them.
Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,

Within EPA?
« Reply #32 on: March 07, 2007, 06:18:08 AM »

Just in case you missed it, get a new dealer. Mine installed the S.E.R.T. and A/C along with pipes and then finished up with the dyno tune. We are all happy. They got my money and I've got a good running Jester. Since they did the work etc... they have no problems with warranty. .. and .... I'm still within EPA. Ok, back to sleep.

Hoist, This thread was getting boring and been drug through the ringer so many times that I thought I would stir the pot. Maybe we should tell the newbies about the search button when the welcome mat is out :o

Thanks for the pm back on the blue air filter. ;)Sky :D

  John,
How do you know that you are within EPA ??? Just curious.

It is my understanding that the EPA certification of a “package” does not accommodate any flexibility.

Consider that in 2001 the SERG was EPA compliant, yet at that time the same engine package (1550 stage 2) installed in any other model was not.

These early stage 2 applications were later certified; I don’t recall the year; ’04 maybe?

It is my sense that it is not possible for a SERT equipped package to be certified because it is not “tamper resistant”. Currently all compliant packages come with an ECM reflash instead of a SERT.

My point exactly! My Dealer told me that he could not touch mine. Without affecting the warranty!!! He suggested to ride it stock until the factory warranty
Expired. He had a few bikes that the Moco DENIED warranty work on due there
being a SERT on the Bikes!!!
It is possible for the Dealer to cover the work, And eat the parts and labor since they are Independent. But ask them to put it in writing and see what they say!  It says right on the SERT " For RACING ONLY"
I think my Dealer does not like it either, But he is just trying to be straight with me. Another dealer told me that , Sure we can put pipes, SERT, AC on your bike! But , We warrant the work of the mechanic only!!! After a lengthy conversation, He told me that you have to sign the invoice which states, " you requested this work to be done, and you are responsible for any Ramifications thereafter." ( In so many words) I am sure it is worded different.
Anyway, I think these dealers are Blowing smoke , just to get the sales, and installs on these bikes that have SERT, True Duals, ETC. And I am talking about the FLHTCUSE2, Because in the 07 catalog they do not even offer a Slip on Muffler for this bike.
One member even posted that his dealer wanted his bike to be STOCK  when the MoCo rep looked at it for a warranty issue.
My dealer says that 07 is the drawing line for the MoCO on EPA,MODS,SERT, Etc.

I know a Dude real well who has bought a 07 CUSE2 who is going to Install a Zippers TM, and Slip ons , And AC Himself. And if he has any major Warranty issues??? He will
put the factory ECM, Pipes and AC back on before taking it to his dealer for warranty work! If it happens on the road, he will trailer it home, and do the same.
BTW, this Dudes bike was made in January of 07. And run in stock configuration for
150 miles. And he checked the plugs to find. They were Black! The rear was almost moist! So they have added fuel to the latter build dates of these bikes! Just as someone else here has posted.
   GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR WARRANTIES!!!
