One last question regarding the fairings: Have you been able to add foot pegs to the engine guard with the fairings? If so, which mounts did you use? I'd like to be able to stretch out a bit (I'm 6'2), but don't want to have to straddle the fairings (if re-installed) to be able to put my feet up.
I'm 6'3" and use the Kuryakyn Longhorn Offset Dually ISO Pegs - Part #4575. Close up of these can be seen here. The fit is similar to previous post by bgregston.

Did a search and found this older topic.

How many of you Ultra boys and girls remove these in the hot summer months?

I'm thinking about taking them off as the weather starts to heat up in Texas.  Are they hard to remove?

I'll check the owners manual, but from a visual inspection, it looks like a couple of attachment points and thats it!!  I did notice a unique shaped bolt that appears to be holding the lower fairing tops on.  Any trick to get these bolts off?

Where do y'all store them when you take them off?  Any tricks not to scratch the hell out of them when you do take them off?

Thanks for the help.

I store mine inside an old pillow cover on the top shelf in the garage.

When taking them off put a towel on the floor below them and just take your time removing them :2vrolijk_21:

I leave mines on year round. I personally think the bike looks better w/them on. When it gets really hot I avoid riding my bike in places that I'll be stuck in traffic that will get the bike or me to overheated. You're lucky to have the vented fairings that I don't so I'd try it w/the vents open all the way at first then decide if you need to take them off. If you do decide they are not that hard to get off, and the suggestion that Hogasm has given for storage is excellent.

Brian,
Interesting you would say this. I bought a new front fender for LD (paint matched) and it came in a box with the usual styrofoam blocks, but the fender was inside of what looked like an oversized pillowcase. Nice and soft. I saved it for something that needs TLC in storage. Good idea

PS
The only bikes I've had lowers for Road Glides and you can't get em with vents, so mine have mostly been off the bike.

I very quickly got used to having mine on there too Gary.  They've been off twice just so I could make the comparison's on hot days.  Can't speak to what yours might do without the vents, but mine with the vents have been perfectly serviceable on even very hot days (both for me and the motor).  And it sure is nice when the cool evening follows the hot day to be able to dial them closed a bit.

It might be more of an option of the crash bar on our bikes wasn't plain and ugly when it's naked.  But it is plain and ugly.  With that crash bar the bike does (to me) look better with the lowers on.

My husband's bike (04 SEEG) came with unvented lowers.  He takes his off when it gets hot (+78) and where we live - it gets hot.  I, on the other hand have the vented lowers, and have never taken mine off.

I would love to leave mine on as well, but I wonder how much a difference it makes with airflow to the engine when they are off.  The adjustable vents are great, but I have to believe the engine gets significantly more air flow with them removed.

Regarding my question on the flange nut.  How do y'all take them off. It is a strange shaped nut....(no comments..this is a family board..kinda) I'll see if I can take a picture.  I guess I could get a pair of needlenose plyers to hold and twist...

I don't know how true this is or not, but 2 dealers have told me that most engine failures they see on 110's, are on Ultras with the lower fairings still on in warm weather. Don't shoot the messenger! :nixweiss: Hoist! 8)

7/16 scoket with extension

Step 1 remove two bolts in side the lower box ( 7/16)

Step 2 remove the 40 torx bolt  remove the lower

be careful not to disfiqure the bottom clamp as you will need to reuse it or be prepared to by another one to reinstall it.

This info is also in the Service Manual

You got it all wrong Howie. According to ancient Greek and Roman tradition, the bearer of GOOD News was sacrificed to the Gods as a way of giving thanks. I don't think you need to worry about being sacrificed if you catch my drift
