Crank runout excessive, new motor on the way!
« on: September 12, 2007, 10:20:13 AM »

At my request and approved by HD Customer service, runout was checked before cylinders chcked.  20 thousands runout.  Motor on the way.
Lets see what happens.

In a way that is progress.  They've now apparently seen enough of them to allow them to be checked.

If corporate customer service issued any kind of service identifier you should post it here.  Others may be able to cite it as precedent when they're in the same position.

Like me. I'm going to be getting mine in when we get back from HS. I'll request permission from the mother ship to check it. I checked it several months ago, but without removing the cam plate, I don't know if the pinion bearing could camouflage it. With the top end already off, the job just got that much easier.

Might need to discuss cam swap if I can get permission for a runout check. Then it's a parts only cam swap, especially if I can put in a set of cams bought at 20% off.

Speaking about that, with the removal of the outer cam bearings, what provides the lateral support for the cams? I'm thinking they would be sliding around without the pressed in bearings to locate them. I haven't seen a set removed yet. Can someone please enlighten me?

I have an open ticket from several months back and it took a letter to Milwaukee to get the attention.

I'd like to know if the new motor has any improvements in quality, process, or parts design  and....
Is this runout growing or is it bad from day one.  Is it possible with the new primary design, and new sprockets and the extra torque that somehow the self adjusting primary chain is over adjusting and causing too much of a side load causing pump failure on the other side?

All good questions. I don't know for sure, but haven't seen anything in print about any improvements on the replacement motors. Logic would have me believe that the 08's would have any and all revised parts and mr_magoo will tell you the 08's ain't that great.

Over tightenend primary chain? A bit tougher to check than pre '07, but you should be able to pull the derby cover and poke a stick around in there to see how much the top of the chain moves. If it's as tight as a guitar string, I'd be quickly pulling the outer primary to peek inside. You've got me interested, so I plan on checking tonight. Thanks for the idea.

I just went to see my bike.  It's gutted.
I asked about the chain.  If the crank is having excessive runout I guess the wobble would then cause a tight chain when it hit the high spot.  Just an observation.

I know the MoCo makes running model year updates to the bikes they produce, but I can tell that everyone is hoping THEIR new bike, or motor is finally got the problems ironed out.  I know I certainly do!  -What a sad commentary on the expensive bikes we like so much.  We shouldn't even have to worry about these problems!  They should be as rare as hens teeth!  Most of the posts should be about the cool new cams we had installed, the great sounding new exhaust, the wonderful trips, etc.

Good thought.  I just remembered that I had chrome rocker box cover hardware added last time.  Need to get that moved.
Did the motor come with all the right covers such as the timing cover?

Thanks

Not absolutely sure, my wrench held the old motor to remove my chrome bolts etc. before sending it back to HD. He could have changed the covers to the original covers. Again, not sure.
