The easiest test you can perform is to pull the wires off of the neutral switch on the tranny and go for a ride. At least that will rule one item out if the problem persists.

You've got a strange one.

:indian_chief:

Yup, that was my proposed starting point chiefy.

I'm having strange electrical happenings on my bike!

The last few times out, I've noticed a strange thing. When I'm slowing down, or it might be related to using the front brake, I get a flash of crackling over the audio system. I happened to notice the "CB" icon flash - it's as if the squelch is zeroed for a fraction of a second. Definitely associated with slowing down.

Today I got some more weird things, seemingly related.  First, the neutral light would flicker then stay on, regardless of speed and gear.  As it flickered, I again noted the audio interference with the flash from the "CB" icon.  Then I also noticed the "key" symbol LED (security system??) lit up too - at the same time as the neutral light, but not necessarily all the time - that is sometimes the neutral light would be on on its own.  Sometimes they'd both go off, but come back on again later.

As these bikes are CAN bus, I'm thinking something is injecting a signal, or more likely just noise, that's sending things haywire.  Why it's related to slowing down/front braking (the original symptom only - the lights can be on at any time) goodness only knows!

Any ideas??? :nixweiss:
Jim,

Someone else recently posted about some strange electrical gremlins somewhat similar to yours, and if I remember correctly the problem was traced to pinched/chafed wires where the harness leaves the fairing and goes under the fuel tank.  As for why when you're braking, the front end settles/dives when you're braking, possibly causing the wires to move. ???

Just a thought.

Thanks Jerry - gives me some more ideas to work on.  Don't suppose you can find the original post?  :drink:

I'm suspecting a fault with the hands free security module.   Looking at the wiring diagram, the neutral switch goes through it, for some reason, and the little key being lit says that the HFSM needs attention, so that looks as if it may be the guilty party.  I'll try disconnecting and reconnecting it to see if that helps.  Whether that's connected with the phantom CB crackle when I'm slowing remains to be seen....

I've also had the same two gremlins on my 07 . They appeared on hot humid rides usually at low speeds.  First the neutral light comes on , no matter what gear you're in.  Later the LED security icon appears. At times their both on. As speeds increase they flicker and eventually disappear.  Source of gremlin "unknown" , just thought you might want to know your not alone.

Red, unless I'm misunderstanding your reply, there's no need to post in the threads you want e-mail notification on.  Just hit the "notify" button.

I feel better now  :drink: always nice to know you're not alone!  And searching for a post I'd seen that I wanted to point you at, looks like there are even more of us:

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=13557.0 is exactly the same fault, and http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=17480.0 may well be....

I suspect this one might be down to the neutral switch - looking at the wiring schematic, it's connected to the security module for some unknown reason, and HD have released a modified switch, 33926-06B covered by Service Bulletin M-1205, from March. See http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=16792.0

I've got the replacement switch on order under warranty, it's just not arrived yet.  But our riding season is over - they've started to salt the roads, so I won't know if it's the cure till spring.
