I had one experience with an 'univited' LEO showing up at the front door late one night. I opened the door and answered his basic questions, and asked if he could come inside. I declined the opportunity for the unwanted company, mainly since he did not have the correct address in the first place. He asked if there were any weapons in the house and I said yes there were multiple models, which made him a bit antsy. I said that I was cooperating, there was no emergency, he had no warrant, so to address the situation I asked him to call his Sergeant and wait outside, even offered him something to drink. Sgt shows up 10 mins later and sorted out the situation quickly.

In your case with even a mistaken 911 call, I'm afraid that the system pretty much allows them access to confirm or eliminate the emergency situation. Not cool from our side of the door, but I think it's part of their response. If it were your kids that called and there was an intruder there who had grabbed the phone......hey better safe than sorry.
Just my 02 cents.

When the babysitter walked back to get you and he followed she probably didn't tell him to wait there or stay put.  Her actions would be considered implied consent by the court.  This is especially the case when a 911 call came in and it could have been an emergency.  Your tone on the phone was probably interpreted as stress by the dispatcher and caused her to dispatch a patrol officer.  If she hadn't and it was an emergency it would have been on your local news.  911 was called and no one came...

The best thing to do in a situation like this is to tell them everything they ask for.  Even though this was an honest mistake, you did call 911 after all.  Be grateful they cared enough to check the situation out.  Next time it might be the real deal.

Well, it appears that the 9-11 event has become the Magic Power Pixie Dust.  Every where you turn, you hear "since 9-11 event law has changed" or something like that.  Which IMO is shamelessly abusive, and as I have said it before: just a dog and pony show.  It's that dreaded "what if there was a foul play or real emergency".  What ever happened to common sense and LEO's intelligence and training to asses the situation?
It appears that 9-11 event gave them a "Cart Blanc".  Never mind that there is a percentage of LEO that is corrupted and incompetent.  This is NJ. Every day (just about) we see a headline about cops being convicted of Rape, Sexual Assault, Dealing drugs and on and on ..
A few years ago, here in my township, a cop started his shift at 7 am.  drove to a public park's play ground at 7:30 and hung himself from swing set.

2 years ago, my mother in law had a heart attack at my house, my wife called 911.  A petrol showed up 45 minutes later and an ambulance 5 minutes after the petrol.  Luckily people at the house knew what to do and she did have defibrillator.
Mentally unstable, doesn't matter.  They have the power.

We turned around and made all old airport security staff "federal employee" even though majority of them still don't speak English.

Trusting and supporting your subordinates, I understand.  But remember, blindly trusting and supporting is promoting irresponsibility and abusive behavior.

Well.....I think the dispatcher did the right thing in sending a car just to make sure everyone was okay.  I get the impression that possibly the 911 operator was new and or inexperienced in asking for your DOB. Most 911 systems are enhanced 911 which shows all the pertinant information on their screen ( occupant name, address etc ). Its hard to second guess the officer checking things out, I'm sure he was looking out for you and your families well being.  All things considered, I cant find fault with the responding officer...possibly you may inquire 911 and find out what the DOB is needed for. I retired from a Long Island police dept after 33 years and went on probably hundreds of 911 hangup calls, most times the parents pinned blame on their kids ::). Almost every one of the people were thankful that someone checked to make sure they were okay.

... As I was sitting in the office, next to the front door, I saw a police car pulled up to the curb.  I continued working while waiting for them to ring the door bell....

you're right d00d.  I would have been more than happy to let him in and give him all the information ...

... They could see me in the office working on the computer when they pulled to the curb and I was expecting to see them at the front door.  I was only 10 feet from the door in front a 8-foot wide window...

Not to rattle your cage, but it sounds like you had every opportunity to get up and meet them at the front door anticipating their arrival. Sounds to me like you were looking for a conflict.

After reading the responses,

I must admit I am at a loss to see where the harm or foul was. The fact that he came into your house that you would have let him in anyway?

The fact that you did not give your implicit permission?   There are a lot of things that are not right in this world, but this is not one of them.

No harm no foul.......just an Officer trying to do his job.

How would that change anything?  The number isn't 191, it's 911.

Because the area code is 917, he was suggesting to use a cell to call so you wouldn't have to dial a 1 before dialing the area code...the mistake he made was trying to dial 1-917 and he accidentally dialed 911...
