I used to mix 100LL avgas about 50 / 50 with 93 octane pump gas in my old bike and it loved it.  Ran great, noticed just a slight increase in cylinder head temps but not enough to worry about.  Also didn't seem to get as good on mileage as straight 93 pump gas.  No buildup on sparkplugs and a nice light grey color in exhaust pipe.  If I ran 100LL without mixing with the 93 octane then I would add about 1/8 cup of Marvel Mystery Oil for lubrication.  Bike was carburated.

in the upper midwest ALL fuel except the stuff listed "for cars prior to 72 and motorcycles" has 10% ethanol in it. and the stuff with no ethanol costs 75 cents or so more than the stuff with ethanol. in fact the only gas thats labeled is the stuff that does NOT have alcohol, if the pump says "gas" it has ethanol in it. diesel has 10% veg oil in it unless its specifically labeled that it does not - just the way it is.

one of the issues with bikes with no o2 sensors is that when they get 10% ethanol the afr goes way way off. last summer when the price of gas got real high - there were only three stations locally that i knew of with the no alchol gas and it was 4.75 per gallon. none of those three still carry it any more.

all gas will have 10% non gas in it in a few years - they govt hope is that all the engines that are left with no o2 sensors will be off the road by then.

the pre 06 bikes could be a pain to get fuel for in some areas now - and bikes with the power commanders on them will have a hell of a time if they are tuned for straight gas and get gas with 10% ethanol in it.

that stuff smells so bad you dont want it in your garage and those little packets are almost impossible to use without getting it all over

It is kinda funky.  When I was using it, I carried a pair of scissors in the TP.  Snipped off the end.  No mess.

No driveability, let alone performance, help tho'.

Chip, at the risk of being controversial, I would suggest that the HARD USE probably has more to do with the lack of deposits than the brand or type of fuel. ;)

To be clear though, hard use is not abuse, for me hard use is running 80 to 85 all day, jaunts up to a 100 or so at will.
If doing that means there will be a lack of deposits on the pistons then that is just a benefit gained.

Sorry I didn't get back to this topic sooner. Its been a busy week. To answer the initial question - yes, I'm talking about the stuff in the the little 3 oz. pouches. We run it with a tank of super unleaded fuel (which on the West Coast, all has the 10% ethanol option). It is simply a fuel additive and yes, its a pain in the a$$ to get those little pouches open without spilling stuff all over. And for heaven's sake, don't get any of that on your paint.

So, if I may recap - it sounds like a few of you have used the stuff and have seen some improvement in performance but no issues with the ECM? Do I have that correct?

AJ,

I was told that the leaded stuff will harm your narrow band sensors.  Haven't bother to test that theory though in either of my 110's.   I will say the Roadking and the Pumpkin both love the higher octane.  Since you are looking to get at least 2 more years out of your bike you might want to verify / consult someone like Doc or Steve Cole about the Lead and narrow sensors.
