A friend of mine has been using Rocket Fuel in his '02 SERK for several years. I started using it in my '07 SERK last year. It seems to cure up the pinging and gives it a little boost. We went to our local HD today to stock up and were told that we shouldn't be running Rocket Fuel in our fuel injected bikes as it may cause problems with the ECM mapping. Has anyone had any problems with this? Like I said, my friend has it used it for several years with no problems.
Can I safely assume you mean "Rockett Brand Racing Fuel", as opposed to the stuff they use to launch the space shuttle? If so, then the only formulation that is street legal and doesn't contain lead is the 100 octane Rockett Fuel. The 111, 114, and 118 octane versions are all leaded.
The only thing I can think of about the 100 Rockett Fuel that might cause a problem is the fact it contains ethanol. Ethanol requires a lower air-fuel ratio than straight gasoline (more fuel, less air), so running it with a map that was optimized for straight gasoline will cause a lean condition. How bad it is depends on how much ethanol is in the blend. Regular pump gas can contain up to 10% ethanol (gasohol), and brands like BP-Amoco are normally bumping that limit. As for the Rockett Fuel 100, I have no idea how much alcohol they actually use but I would guess to get the 100 octane number they probably use more than BP does to get their 93 octane number. Just a guess.
Suggestion: Get a proper tune to cure the pinging, and start saving a lot of money by running plain old pump gas.
