... I do not care if I get lost, as long as it's not in a crappy neighborhood. ...

I'm not too worried about a crappy neighborhood either.  Because I have a .38 in my pocket.   ;)

and everyone in those crappy neighborhoods are packing semi-automatics.  The problem is the GPS can be programmed to avoid tolls, etc. but I don't think there is a setting to avoid crappy neighborhoods.  If you are somewhere that you need the GPS in the first place, chances are that looking through your turn list won't alert you that you are going a route that you may not feel at comfort with.  Try to keep that .38 in your pocket in those neighborhoods...they are all armed, their weapons aren't registered, and when asked, nobody saw anything.  But that's just one person's point of view.

Does anyone know if the H-D nav system utilizes the small XM antenna in any way?  I took the small XM antenna off (using my Zumo with large XM antenna) and now the bike's GPS has no idea where it is at

There are 2 antennas one for the XM and one for the GPS, they look the same and I am guessing you removed the one for the GPS.

I purchased my bike last Sept and didnt turn the nav system on until a week ago when I read a thread about people haveing problems an needing modules replaced. Once I figured it out it worked OK, but personally I will never use it, and wouldnt have bothered to puchase one if it hadnt been included. I guess I am the Lewis and Clark type haha

After all the bad press on here I was not in a big hurry to get my HD GPS working, but now that I have it and have used it...I LIKE IT.
Is it as user friendly as a touch screen Garmin??...No!
Has it been reliable and accurate??...Yes! (well reliable once they got it to work) :)
Maybe my expectations were so low it has surprised me but I like the fact it cut's out the radio and works through the speakers, I like that there is no ugly mounting bracket or cables.  Like most modern tech pieces I think the more you use it and become familiar, the easier it is to use.
Yea I know it is not as good as a zumo550 but I don't need to worry about a mounting screw, a bracket, a power cord, someone stealing it, packing it or forgetting it at home.
It is there, it is clean, and so far it has been more accurate than the one I use in my truck which again is not saying much because it is a P.O.S..

I agree with your comments.

I have used it when I had a destination at a certain time to be there. I rode the countryside and it recalculated at every non-planned turn I took.

The "clean look" is a BIG POSITIVE, IMO.

Well, I have the SEUC3, so does that qualify me to respond? :)  I just initiated my GPS yesterday and I'm not impressed.  Granted I live in Alaska and there aren't that many roads to begin with.  Anyhow I attempted to enter my home address and after entering Delta Junction it only offered about a handful of streets and mine wasn't one of them.  So then tried the cross road method and less of a choice there.  So wound up just going home and saving the home location.  We'll see what happens on the way home today.  Admittedly I'm somewhat of a dinosaur when it comes to all these gizmo's and gadgets.  You should see me in the Lexus trying to figure all those goodies out.  Perhaps in time I'll become used to it, but in the meantime I'll just do the IFR bit.

I think the system is pretty much the same as the 09, so sure you're qualified.  :D  I tried to find a post office in another city yesterday using the POI feature, and there is no category for post office or government building in general.  There's one for law/courts tho.  I guess the system designers figure a Harley rider is more likely to be looking for a jail or courthouse than for a post office?  Makes you want to go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Update on finding my way home
« Reply #24 on: May 09, 2009, 11:35:55 AM »

Well after going home and programming the lat/long and saving it I figured I'd see how it worked on the way home the next day.  All right, I'm at work and fire it up and the first thing it asked for was the CD.  Okay, back off the bike, rummage through the tour pack, inserted it, took forever to upload/download?  Finally says it's ready and off we go to follow the little arrow.  This is pretty cool!  First thing I notice is that it's now 3 miles further to my house than it was yesterday! :o  Riding down the highway and make the left turn towards the house.  What's this, it tells me I should turn around?  Somehow I must have forgotten where home is at after 20 + years of living there.  :confused5: It tells me in 100 yard increments to turn around but I'm persistent in my endeavors and continue on.  I'm not about to let this GPS dictate when and where I should go!  Finally after 400 yards it gives up and the little arrow returns showing me to continue on, imagine that.  See, sometimes you just have to be firm. ;)  The rest of the trip was uneventful and it was accurate right up to the house.  I wonder where I would have wound up had I followed the directions not to turn?  If you are off the major highway system up here they are utterly worthless unless you already know where you are going, and if that's the case you don't need one.  When we move down to the lower 48 I'm sure it will be pretty handy.  Until then, the CD is out, and will stay in the tour pack.  As an old pilot I still kind of prefer sectionals and maps.
