One of my friends had the same problem on his.  They adjusted the compensator sprocket and said it was a common problem/fix.  IF it starts again they are going to replace it.

:nixweiss:    Not sure what your friend had adjusted, unless his dealer added another spring to the spring pack to reduce bottoming of the compensator.  I don't see where that would have anything to do with starting, other than to reduce the initial noise when the compensator bottoms.  Any idea what they actually did?

Several of the members here got a chance to hear that noise on mine when we were in Eureka Springs, AR earlier this year.  My starter quit working altogether on a rain gear stop.  I had my starter replaced, and that solved the problem for about a day or 2.  When I got back home, I had my local dealer check out the ACR's (automatic compression releases) and that was the problem, or at least the other part of the problem.  Since having the ACR's replaced, I haven't had that problem anymore.

Just a few weeks ago, my friend was having the same problem on his Ultra with a 113" engine.  It had the identical symptoms as mine, but they found that the problem was in the electronic throttle on his.  They replaced the throttle by wire setup with what they told him was a new, upgraded setup.  That fixed his problem.

Just got off the phone with the Tech at the Dealership.  My 07 Ultra was having the same problem and here is the scoop.  My compensator is shot  It was explained to me that this will cause the engine cranks sensor to be "out of time: and therefore cause the starter issues.  I then asked about my friends bike and he said what they did on his was to add a spring like you suspected.  The tech said it was all to help keep the the engine crank sensor "in time per say."
