Starting Problems
« on: September 06, 2009, 07:50:47 PM »

I have a 2008 CVO ultra. I have had all the recall work done to date. That I know of. I have taken bike back to dealer three times to find out why when I go to start the bike if it doesn't engage and run it make a clunking noise when I engage the switch. It happens sporadically. But often enough to make me be concerned. It reminds of the noise when I had the recall work done. However when I take to the HD Shop they say it is not the bike it is the SE RACE TUNER. I have had it checked buy another HD Shop they say all the downloads are correct and the bike starts fine too. Again I ask why does it at times make the clunking noise when I engage the switch instead of starting, they said that is normal. I am like how is that normal, but no answer that makes the least bit of sense. I read that others have unplugged the rear compression release and that stopped the problem. I was told by someone that the started shaft may be misaligned. All I know is I cannot get HD to fix so I am looking for any help or suggestion to fix it myself. Please Help.

Kirk, you need to contact H-D directly and file a complaint.  The only thing that's normal when you press the start button is for the engine to crank and start.  Anything else is abnormal and should be corrected.  That is all the discussion that should be necessary, and if your dealer can't handle it I suggest you let H-D be responsible for getting it corrected.  You're not the first person with this problem, and H-D should be fully aware of the issue.

BTW, unplugging the rear compression release is not an option, don't mess with it.  And if I understand what you're saying and you just hear a clunk and the engine doesn't turn over, it could very well be a bad starter drive or ring gear on the clutch.  Others have had those issues.

Have the dealer open the primary up and inspect the starter drive ring (on the clutch basket) for any chipped or broken teeth. If it looks ok then the issue is most likely the starter clutch which is located inside the starter.

I did all the work on my 04 b/b ,   ring gear on clutch, battery,  cables,  almost anything that was recommended,I gave it a try.   Still had the griding noise and knowing that the starter wasn't engaging. Finally, I did go for a new starter (all chrome of course) and the issues of just trying to start my bike were over. But I did have 45k miles on it too. On an 08, you really should have your problems corrected with your warrantee. Look for a new dealer if you have to. Sorry about your problems.

I recommend finding another dealer. There is definately a problem there. In fact, I 'm fixing to address this problem with my dealer as well, because sometimes when I hit the button, my starter grinds, like my old shovel used too. Then eventually, she will fire up.. Usually, after sitting a day or two.. Good Luck..

ok, so you change the starter, do you stay with the 1.4 or go High torque. my thought is that it may spin stronger but with reduction, it may spin slower

The 1.4 is the high torque from HD. Stick with the HD starter it is probably the best out there. I have tried many different aftermarket units and now will only sell and install the HD unit.

Just had my clutch basket and starter clutch replaced on my 2009 SEUC. It's perfect now.

I did stay with the HD 1.4.  Things are good now with the other upgrades I did.

Check previous threads....when a dealer installs a SE Race Tuner it disenables the ACRs.....the Tech must re-enable the ACRs....I had the same problem...tell em to check the ACRs.

One of my friends had the same problem on his.  They adjusted the compensator sprocket and said it was a common problem/fix.  IF it starts again they are going to replace it.

Adjusted the compensator sprocket?? yeah...right before the muffler bearings were changed. Seems to cure a lot of things. :huepfenlol2:

I would really like to know what they adjusted, to my knowledge there is no "Adjustment" for the sprocket.

I adjust them with a nice long torque wrench and adjust right until the point it feels like my rear end is going to pucker.
