Just taken my bike in for what I thought was a new tire to replace after a puncture and have been told that the inside of the rear wheel has pitted and corroded away.Warranty ran out 3 days ago and will not do under warranty. They want upwards of £3000 to put it right.
Has anyone got any ideas ?
John, 3000 pounds stirling is about $4300 US if I'm not mistaken. What exactly were they planning to do for that price, custom build a wheel and then gold plate it for you? Something sounds rather fishy to me, and I think you need to get a second opinion from someone else.
The other folks are giving you the best advice (and it's what your dealer should have done automatically if he was worth a tinker's damn). Contact the MoCo and ask them to replace the wheel. There is no way an aluminum wheel should fail due to corrosion in two years time. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if such an early failure wouldn't be considered a safety problem possibly subject to recall. BTW, you haven't used any self-sealing products in the tires have you? Some of those products, usually the fly by night brands, have been known to seriously corrode aluminum wheels.
