rear wheel coroded
« on: May 21, 2010, 08:32:12 AM »

Just taken my bike in for what I thought was a new tire to replace after a puncture and have been told that the inside of the rear wheel has pitted and corroded away.Warranty ran out 3 days ago and will not do under warranty. They want upwards of £3000 to put it right.

Has anyone got any ideas ?

Assuming the corrosion as they describe it exists it obviously didn't occur in three days time.  While I'm not a proponent of begging a mftr for free warranty handling beyond a specified warranty period such handling is something they can and sometimes will do.  Since the failure is something that has been ongoing for quite some time and since it was discovered only three days past the warranty expiration this is one of the rare times I'd actually call the mftr and plead my case.

The dealer my tell you (or be limited by the mftr to) black and white hard limits on the warranty period.  There are times when the mftr will extend a courtesy though.  Make the call to HD itself.

I would hope it would be replaced under a "customer satisfaction" action claim by the dealer to the mothership..Can't hurt to ask...

Agred. I'd fight hard in this direction.

If you have documentation that suggest the HD dealer replaced the previous tires, I think you have a good shot. However, if someone else did it, I'm not so sure.

Bingo, Bingo...

Have your dealer contact his factory rep and ask for a "good faith warranty" claim... if the factory rep denies it contact customer service (Harley-Davidson customer service representative call (414) 343-4056) and state your claim. Remember give them (Customer Service Rep) a chance (you get more with sugar then salt). I can tell you from personal experience that this can work. :2vrolijk_21:

John, 3000 pounds stirling is about $4300 US if I'm not mistaken.  What exactly were they planning to do for that price, custom build a wheel and then gold plate it for you?  Something sounds rather fishy to me, and I think you need to get a second opinion from someone else.

The other folks are giving you the best advice (and it's what your dealer should have done automatically if he was worth a tinker's damn).  Contact the MoCo and ask them to replace the wheel.  There is no way an aluminum wheel should fail due to corrosion in two years time.  As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if such an early failure wouldn't be considered a safety problem possibly subject to recall.  BTW, you haven't used any self-sealing products in the tires have you?  Some of those products, usually the fly by night brands, have been known to seriously corrode aluminum wheels.

Is the warranty for corrosion  the same as our 2 year for failed parts?  Maybe i am thinking cars not bikes but i thought the resistance to corrosion was longer.

As it stands now the dealer from where I bought the bike has asked the area warranty rep to do it under warranty, so I will give them some time.Over here in the UK it would appear that I should maybe quote the sale of goods act that the wheel is not fit for the purpose it was made.Just for info the previous owner it would seem has put ultra seal in the tires.I have used this product for years but Harley may not be suited. The price roughly comes from £1400 for the wheel and then there are bearings and the labour element.I am going to the dealers this morning to have a look but service tell me they would not be happy for me to take it away as it is dangerous, but I might have unfortunately part exchange with another Harley dealer if I cant get it done on warranty.I will keep you all updated and thanks for concern.

Would really be interested to know where exactly the corrosion was? Do you know how extensive an area had corroded, or by any chance have a photo?

The Dealer has said that there are chunks out of it as though mice have been eating it.The previous owner had Ultraseal in and now they think that might have corroded it !

Well I am not too sue about that! I have had ultra seal in my last three Harleys and also have it in my current CVO for the last 2 years. Are they really saying that Ultrseal will eat its way through steel/chrome but not the rubber tire????

Just my opinion but it sounds to me as though they are trying to use that as an excuse.

Watch out for mice that eat aluminum.
