I will agree with Jerry get the bike tuned! Use the fuel you buy when you have it tuned to eliminate special fuel etc. It is hot in Arizona and I have had 4 110's all tuned by the same guy with no, I repeat no issues and we put well over 15k a year on both bikes we currently have. This state only has 91 octane and they run good in the heat and very seldom does the back cyl shut down unless you get stuck in stop and go traffic. Chris
Can you tell me who the tuner is?  I am out here in Scottsdale as well, just did an exhaust swap and what to make sure all is running right!

Guitarider,

You have GMR out in your area that tunes well.   You might look him up he is in Prescott if memory serves me right.

My 2005 CVO Ultra had pinged like hell on very hot days when i lived in Minnesota. The dealer tried everything and nothing fixed the problem. I moved to Virgina and the problem went away. I was told it was due to the way they blend gas in Minnesota.

Thanks.  I will check them out.  I also had this pinging problem 2 weeks ago when it was 100 degrees here.  Happened during bike week ride, stop and go traffic!

I have a 2002 softail with a high compression 95 motor. The overlap of the cam is so extreme that I usually don't even bother with the compression releases when starting, even with 11 : 1 compression. I tune it every year right on the ragged edge of timing. Almost every new summer season, I have to retune it for this years gas. I could just set the timing back a few degrees everywhere, but that just isn't fun for me. My point is that every seasons gasoline becomes more prone to pinging if your timing is near the limit or you fuel mix is too lean.

My bike was a ping-monster...drove me crazy from 3000rpm-on!

Took it to the best tuner here in middle GA (Hwy 41 Cycle Shop) Jesse Sowell and he tuned it throughout the power band to have 13/1 AFR.  She runs much cooler and zero pinging.  Also gleaned 93hp/112tq with it over 100 from 2400rpm thru 4800.

He corrected a previous tune done through my SERT @ an HD Dealer that was most likely performed via wide open throttle (WOT).

Beemer,

I would be very concerned if a tuner tuned my bike to 13.0 to 1 throughout my map.    I dont mean he set it to 13.0 to get my VE's but if he left it there when we were done I would be worried.

i dont think 13 to 1 would hurt much

other than the pocket book - probably lower gas milage to pickup range

Lucas additive may help it, until you get it in to a good tuner.

You can always try some octane increase gas treatment and see if that helps...  if it does not help the noise might be something else.
