Pinging Back Again
« on: February 28, 2011, 07:42:31 AM »

Yesterday was like a summer day in Charlotte.  High of 82.  Bike has run great all winter, but yesterday the dreaded pinging started again.  After a two-hour ride I hit the stop and go traffic at the stop lights on my way home and every time I pulled away the engine pinged.  I always use Exxon premium gas that is 93 octane and my bike is stock except for Bub 7 slip-ons.  Can anyone give me a simple explanation of why my bike pings when the temperature gets to 80 degrees?  If you had pinging issues, what have you done to cure it?  I've thought about adding a fuel management system, but from some of the threads I have read, they create their own problems.

HighwayKing, when my 09 SEUC was new(at about 1100 miles) I took it on a trip from Simi Valley Ca. to Gordon Nebraska. DID a lot of off freeway riding to enjoy the scenery. It pinged relentlessly the entire trip,(as soon as I used non Ca. gas) especially when the weather was hot.( Mesquite Nevada at least 115 degrees). It hardly pinged at all  on California gas don't ask me why. When I got home from my 2 week trip I put on a non cat headpipe, open air cleaner.1.75 Fulsac baffles and TTS mastertune. I guess basically Steve's stage one kit. Since then ( and I have ridden in some hot weather not 115 degrees, but close to 100 many times) without pinging, and the hot throttle shut off rarely disengages the rear cylinder anymore) I will make another post about this after I come back from my intended trip this summer to Wyoming and report on pinging if any when loaded with luggage and passenger. CAHDBIKER (I have not done any additional tuning just the map from Steve)

It all comes down to engine design and lean air fuel mixtures.  If you want to eliminate the problem, get the bike tuned.  Proper adjustment of air fuel ratio and ignition timing can eliminate the problem, and the cooler running engine will also tend to be more reliable.  I'm not sure what kind of problems you think tuning creates, but when done properly I'm not aware of any real downside other than failure to meet EPA regulations.

Take it in to your Dealer. That is what was going on with BLUU and it was tuned perfectly but as it deteriated it started to Ping and sound terrible. They found an abundance of Carbon Build-Up in both cylinders above the pistons. The pistons were galling the piston walls. Not sure why all that happened because I can't get a good answer from anyone at the dealer but you never no maybe the rings were put in backwards at the factory and nobody will admitt that error.

The timing is set to far forward and needs to be adjusted by dyno or have your HD shop find the right setting for your bikes set up providing you have a race tuner. Another words you are getting fire igniting as the piston is still on its up travel. This is were the pinging noise comes from and this is bad news. Correct timming will ingnite fire at the same time the pistion reaches its full up lift or as close as they can get it.

my bike is stock except for Bub 7 slip-ons.

I had the same problem when I changed mufflers.

First thing I'd do is swap the stock mufflers back on and see if it pings with them. If so you know you need to tune the bike for the Bub 7s.

By putting a less restrictive muffler on you have leaned it out more.

I will agree with Jerry get the bike tuned! Use the fuel you buy when you have it tuned to eliminate special fuel etc. It is hot in Arizona and I have had 4 110's all tuned by the same guy with no, I repeat no issues and we put well over 15k a year on both bikes we currently have. This state only has 91 octane and they run good in the heat and very seldom does the back cyl shut down unless you get stuck in stop and go traffic. Chris

Get the bike properly tuned, the gas out here is poor to say the least. We get a fair amount of the 110's in here and once these guy start swapping mufflers and a/c the simple fixs do not work. You cannot correct the entire tune with a O2 device, or a fuel pack etc. Correct tune will put a smile on your face.

If your CCP is over 200 that will cause the pinging too. Guys out here in Cali will get a 5 gallon of race fuel and put about 10-12 ounces or so mixed with premium and that seems to do the trick. Then they will keep a 2 liter bottle down in the bag so when they fill up they can mix a little in. That's what they do when they're running really big motors with high compression. It seems to work for them...

Lucas additive may help it, until you get it in to a good tuner.
